Behavioral research has found that trait anxiety is associated with a lower propensity for risk‐taking. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this relation are still unknown. To address this question, we employed voxel‐based morphometry (VBM) analysis and resting‐state functional connectivity (rs‐FC) to examine the influence of trait anxiety on risk‐taking. We theorized that trait anxiety may affect risk‐taking via negative prospection during episodic future thinking, which is known to be mediated by episodic memory systems including the hippocampus. We measured risk‐taking using the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) and found that risk‐taking in this task was negatively correlated with trait anxiety. The VBM results suggested a positive correlation between trait anxiety and grey matter volumes in the hippocampus, consistent with previous results. Functional connectivity results indicated that functional connectivity between a right hippocampus cortex (RHPC) seed region and left insula (LInsula) was positively correlated with trait anxiety scores but negatively correlated with risk‐taking. Critically, mediation analysis showed that trait anxiety played a completely mediating role in the relation between the functional connectivity of RHPC‐LInsula and risk‐taking. These results suggested that trait anxiety can affect risk‐taking via episodic future thinking mechanisms subserved by the hippocampal cortex acting in concert with emotional and motivational control mechanisms subserved by the insular cortex.

Aim This research was carried out so as to reveal the relationships between the anxiety state of nurses, their critical thinking disposition, and decision‐making strategies. Methods Survey forms and scales that were related to demographic attributes, anxiety, critical thinking and decision‐making were used in this research. The sampling was formed with 326 nurses who were selected by using the random sampling method. The data were collected between November, 2014 and January, 2015 via a Descriptive Information Form, the California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory, State–Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Decision‐Making Strategies Scale. Results Of the nurses, 91.4% were discovered to have low critical thinking disposition levels. The nurses’ scores in analytics, open‐mindedness, and curiosity were higher, compared to the other categories. As for decision‐making, independent decision‐making was the most commonly used strategy. There was a poor positive relationship between the age of the nurses and their points of independent decision‐making and intuitive decision‐making. It was detected that age and open‐mindedness affected the total points of independent decision‐making, intuitive decision‐making, and rational decision‐making. Conclusion The critical thinking training of nurses affects their rational decision‐making levels and their age affects independent, intuitive, and rational decision‐making. Systematicity affects only indecision in a negative way, whereas open‐mindedness negatively affects intuitive decision‐making, rational decision‐making, and indecision. Anxiety negatively affects independent decision‐making, whereas it affects indecision strategy positively. The working style of nurses does not affect their decision‐making strategies. Indecision strategy is negatively predicted by open‐mindedness, systematicity, and self‐confidence and it is positively predicted by anxiety.

Summary: When exposed to an unfamiliar open space, animals experience fear and attempt to find an escape route. Anxiety emerges when animals are confronted with a challenging obstacle to this fear motivated escape. High anxiety animals do not take risks; they avoid the challenge. The present experiments investigated this risk avoidant behavior in mice. In experiment 1, BALB/c, C57BL/6J and CD-1 mice were exposed to a large platform with downward inclined steep slopes attached on two opposite sides. The platform was elevated 75 and 100 cm from the ground, in a standard (SPDS) and in a raised (RPDS) configuration, respectively. In experiment 2, the platform was elevated 75 cm from the ground. Mice had to climb onto a stand at the top of upward inclined slopes (SPUS). In experiment 3, BALB/c mice were exposed to SPDS with steep or shallow slopes either in early morning or in late afternoon. In all 3 test configurations, mice spent more time in the areas adjacent to the slopes than in the areas adjacent to void, however only C57BL/6J and CD-1 crossed onto the slopes in SPDS, and crossed onto the stands in SPUS whereas BALB/c remained on the platform in SPDS and explored the slopes in SPUS. Elevation of the platform from the ground reduced the crossings onto the slopes in C57BL/6J and CD-1, and no differences were observed between BALB/c and C57BL/6J. BALB/c mice demonstrated no difference in anxiety when tested early morning or late afternoon; they crossed onto shallow slopes and avoided the steep one.
