Training Using a Commercial Immersive Virtual Reality System on Hand–Eye Coordination and Reaction Time in Young Musicians: A Pilot Study

Abstract: The implementation of virtual reality (VR) opens up a wide range of possibilities for the development of dexterity, speed and precision of movements. The aim of this study was to investigate whether immersive VR training affected the hand–eye coordination and reaction time in students of the state music school. This study implemented a single-group pre-post study design. This study enrolled 14 individuals, submitted to a 15 min training session of the immersive music game “Beat Saber”, once a day for 5 consecu… Show more

“…VR technology, based on its high immersion, control, security, and other characteristics, has been widely used, including in psychological research and clinical psychology [57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65]. It also plays an important role in the education and training of young people and professionals [66,67]. In a simulated environment, the weather, lighting, and other factors can be controlled, which cannot be controlled in a real environment.…”

“…Reaction time and accuracy have been reported as being linked together such that as reaction time increases, accuracy of task completion decreases and vis-à-vis [14], therefore these metrics will be used to form the basis of the initial research. [15], proved their hypothesis that VR has "the potential to improve reaction time in young musicians". This demonstrates how VR can further catalyse RT improvement.…”

“…To achieve this task, we also provided an operational definition of hand–eye coordination. Hand–eye coordination is a visual system capability that coordinates the revised information to control the hands to complete a task [ 26 , 27 ], such as writing [ 24 ]. Therefore, the maze track task was selected to evaluate the participants’ hand–eye coordination by measuring the completion time and errors in different ways of manipulating the Chinese brush.…”
