BackgroundCollisions involving workers and mobile machines continue to be a major concern in underground coal mines. Over the last 30 years, these collisions have resulted in numerous injuries and fatalities. Recently, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) proposed a rule that would require mines to equip mobile machines with proximity detection systems (PDSs) (systems designed for automated collision avoidance). Even though this regulation has not been enacted, some mines have installed PDSs on their scoops and hauling machines. However, early implementation of PDSs has introduced a variety of safety concerns. Past findings show that workers' trust can affect technology integration and influence unsafe use of automated technologies.MethodsUsing a mixed-methods approach, the present study explores the effect that factors such as mine of employment, age, experience, and system type have on workers' trust in PDSs for mobile machines. The study also explores how workers are trained on PDSs and how this training influences trust.ResultsThe study resulted in three major findings. First, the mine of employment had a significant influence on workers' trust in mobile PDSs. Second, hands-on and classroom training was the most common types of training. Finally, over 70% of workers are trained on the system by the mine compared with 36% trained by the system manufacturer.ConclusionThe influence of workers' mine of employment on trust in PDSs may indicate that practitioners and researchers may need to give the organizational and physical characteristics of each mine careful consideration to ensure safe integration of automated systems.

Self-reliant digital systems (SDS) can adapt to changing circumstances and environments, evaluate complex situations, make decisions and optimise processes. In this context, work processes also change, since SDS are controlled by workers but are also partly out of control, that is, processing information independently and without worker influence. It can be expected that handling and interacting with SDS impact workers’ perception of autonomy and control and their interrelationship. This paper focuses on these developments at airports and is based on 24 interviews with airport and flight staff. The findings point to a difference between objective control and the perception of control. Moreover, we identify autonomy-enhancing and autonomy-restricting forms of control in contexts using SDS. In this sense, the article contributes to clarifying autonomy and control in the specific context of SDS at airports and conceptualising the interrelation of autonomy and control.

The development of automated technologies in our daily life has transformed the role of human operators from a controller to a teammate who shares control with automated agents. However, this 'teammate' relationship between humans and automation raises an important but challenging research question regarding the formation of human-agent trust. Considering that the formation of human-agent trust is a dynamic and sophisticated process involving human factors, this study conducted a two-phase online experiment to examine personal influences on users' trust propensity and their trust formation in human-agent interactions. Our findings revealed distinctive personal influences on dispositional trust and the formation of human-agent trust at different stages. We found that users who exhibit higher trust propensities in humans also develop higher trust toward automated agents in initial stages. This study, as the first of its kind, not only fills the gap of knowledge about personal influences on human-agent trust, but also offers opportunities to enhance the future design of automated agent systems.
