Training sequence versus cyclic prefix-a new look on single carrier communication

Abstract: International audienceOrthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), with the help of a cyclic prefix, enables low complexity frequency domain equalization, but suffers from a high crest factor. Single carrier with cyclic prefix (SC-CP) has the same advantage with similar performance, but with a lower crest factor and enhanced robustness to phase noise. The cyclic prefix is overhead, so we put more information in it by implementing this cyclic prefix as a training sequence (TS). This new training aided fre… Show more

“…The synchronization in OFDM systems have divided into data aided and non-data aided configuration [8]. The data aided configuration uses pilot sequence or training symbol to estimate the frequency and time mismatch of OFDM transmission.…”

“…The conventional CP (i.e., a copy of the tail in the transmitted block) is basically unknown before detecting data. Therefore, inserting a unique word (UW) as a known pilot sequence instead of the CP has been proposed [16]- [18]. In this case, the data block size is decreased to (N −N P ) symbols for satisfying periodicity within the FFT window as shown in Fig.…”

“…We previously showed [8] that the use of training sequence-aided SC (TA-SC) block transmission [9,10] instead of CP-SC block transmission can significantly reduce the probability of removing the correct path at early stages in QRM-MLBD in the case of single-input single-output (SISO) case. We apply previously proposed training sequence-aided QRM-MLBD to the SC-MIMO spatial multiplexing.…”
