Training Method and Other Factors Affecting Student Accuracy in Bovine Pregnancy Diagnosis

Abstract: To optimize bovine pregnancy diagnosis (PD) training, factors influencing student performance were investigated. The objective was to determine whether training method, gender, background (farm, urban, or mixed), previous experience in bovine PD, and current career interest influenced the accuracy of bovine PD by trans-rectal palpation (TRP). Fourth-year (of a 6-year program) veterinary students (n=138) received one PD training session in groups using either simulator training on Breed'n Betsy (BB) or training… Show more

“…Furthermore, it seems difficult for students to get additional bovine PD and TRP exposure outside the veterinary course. 10 Several studies have evaluated the use of simulators and live cows in an efort to improve bovine TRP training. 7 8 10-15 The efectiveness of simulators such as the Breed'n Betsy (BB; Brad Pickford, Australia, http:// www.…”

“…10 16-19 Student speciicity (correctly identify non-pregnant cows) was lower than sensitivity (correctly identify pregnant cows) and additional student training on non-pregnant cows could be a strategy to improve the necessary palpation skills. 10 However, it is not known if pre-existing TRP skills on non-pregnant cows can be used to predict future PD accuracy.…”

“…The teacher has the ability to track the student's activity on the monitor and give instructions. The results of the conducted experiment prove that supplementing the training with exercises on the simulator significantly affect the skills of students, in comparison with the control group that did not use phantom exercises (2)(3)(4).…”

“…In 2008, a modification of Haptic Cow simulator -the "Ouch-o-Meter" -was described. The device was designed for training safe and effective pressing during per rectum palpation (1) Explanations: Categories of responses: strongly agree (SA), agree (A), neutral (N), do not agree (D), strongly disagree (SD) teaching motoric skills through seeing and touching.…”
