Training load and recovery status during a short-term overseas training camp in Taiwan futsal players

Abstract: Purpose. The purpose of the study was to examine the physiological performance profiles and recovery status in a men futsal team during a short-term overseas training camp. Methods. Among 11 Chinese Taipei men national futsal players, we determined the average heart rate (HR), the natural log of the square root of the mean sum of the squared differences between R-R intervals (LnrMSSD), and activity profiles, as well as applied a wellness questionnaire and a recovery scoring guide during a 5-day overseas traini… Show more

“…One possible explanation to this finding may be related to good physical preparation prior to the OT, as evidenced by highest LnRMSSD mean (4.22 ± 0.32-4.26 ± 0.31 log) among the study periods. This finding was consistent with our recent study that reported that the LnRSSMD and general wellness score were not associated with accumulation of TL in adult national futsal players during a five-day oversea training camp prior to a continental tournament [32]. Nevertheless, our findings suggested that the bias and variation of LnRSSMD is not accompanied with TL and recovery status during training camps and tournament.…”

“…A qualified sports trainer conducted the anthropometric measurement and collected all data during these periods. The methods to record anthropometric measurement, resting HRV, sRPE, and general wellness questionnaire have been reported in our previous study [32]. to Taiwan TD = training day; FM = friendly match; TM = training match; OM = official match; TC 1st = first training camp; IT = invitation tournament; TC 2nd = second training camp; OT = official tournament.…”

“…The maximal distance for recording the signal was 200 meters. The activities profiles included total distance, distance in zone 1 (8.0-11.99 km/h −1 ), recovery distance in zone 2 (12.0-17.99 km/h −1 ), distance in zone 3 (>18.0 km/h −1 ), maximum speed (maxSpeed), and number of sprints (>24.0 km/h −1 ) [3]. The same unit of measurement (GPS) was used by each player to avoid variability.…”

“…Small-sided games, positioning games, and regular games are the most common activities in those training camps. Based on the fact that these periods (training camps) are exclusively dedicated to improving the overall team's dynamics and selecting the players for the final squad, it is expected that a high level of training load will be promoted, mainly considering that in some of the days there may occur two training sessions [3]. This congested calendar may promote changes in the stimulus-recovery dynamics, and, for that reason, it is important to employ a player monitoring cycle that can help coaches and sports scientists properly manage the load and readiness of players [4].…”

“…In general, domestic training camps (DTC) provide benefits for testing squad members in individual and team performance, periodizing physical and mental preparation, and tactical strategies prior to tournaments (Clemente et al, 2020). Conversely, overseas training camps (OTC) have advantages in creating a simulative environment of official tournaments and thus familiarizing players with the usual intensity of psychophysiological responses during competitions (Lu et al, 2019;Chen et al, 2020). However, a comparative study to examine training loads between DTC and OTC has not been reported elsewhere.…”
