Trainee’s anxiety and counseling self-efficacy in counseling sessions

Abstract: Wang, without their encouragement and inspiration, I would not have had enough courage to pursue my graduate degree in the United States. I also want to thank Dr. Joel Wong for his inspiration and modeling in my research development when I was a master's student at Indiana University Bloomington.

“…Quality and type of supervision have been linked to counselling self-efficacy with extensive literature on the supervisory working alliance (e.g. Marmarosh et al , 2013; Mehr et al , 2015; Tsai, 2016; Williams, 2017); a stronger alliance predicts higher self-efficacy. Task-oriented supervision style (structured, goal-oriented and evaluative) has been linked to higher counselling self-efficacy (Fernando and Hulse-Killacky, 2005) as has “live” supervision (Durham, 2003) among substance abuse counsellors in the US navy, particularly in the domain of intervention skills.…”

“…There was no significant difference found in the other sub-dimensions and total scores of counseling self-efficacy. Tsai (2015) found in his study that gender was not significantly related to counseling self-efficacy. Similarly, Öztürk (2014) concluded that the gender of psychological counseling candidates did not significantly differentiate their levels of counseling self-efficacy.…”

“…Mindfulness can promote CSE by enhancing the ability to remain present and self‐aware (Campbell & Christopher, 2012; Fulton & Cashwell, 2015). This is because counseling students with higher mindfulness are constructivist agents who may more effectively use self‐regulation and feedback to reduce the negative impact of stress and anxiety on CSE (Daniels & Larson, 2001; Tsai, 2015). In other words, enhanced mindfulness can help counseling students to set attainable goals, to view stress as challenging (rather than debilitating), and to engage in self‐aiding thoughts as they learn to become professional counselors.…”
