Traffic vehicle cognition in severe weather based on radar and infrared thermal camera fusion

Abstract: The accuracy and robustness of vehicle cognition in severe weather have always been the focus and difficulty of intelligent vehicle environment perception. This paper proposes a vehicle cognition method based on radar and infrared thermal camera information fusion in severe weather. The fusion of radar and infrared cameras can greatly enrich the completeness of vehicle cognitive information. First, an attention mechanism based on radar guidance information was proposed to extract the vehicle region of interest… Show more

“…The echo characteristics are apparent because the RCS on the front of the human body is more prominent than on other sides. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate the proportion of the return energy of the extremities and calculate the energy ratio according to equation (1). To prevent the influence of the trunk on the calculation of the energy ratio of the extremities, the coefficient ε is set to 500.…”

“…Millimeter-wave radar has the advantages of small size, high bandwidth, and suitability for all-day and all-weather use. It is widely employed in unmanned vehicle detection [1][2][3], medical life signs detection [4], human behavior detection [5], and human-computer interaction technology's micro-action detection [6]. Compared with non-contact sensors (infrared [7], optical camera [8], etc), which detect human behavior, radio frequency signals emitted and received by radar can * Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed.…”

“…Xue et al 25 designed a fast saliency map of vehicle targets in infrared images at night to achieve rapid acquisition of regions of interest (ROIs) for vehicles. Zhangu et al 29 fused radar and infrared cameras to greatly enrich the completeness of vehicle cognitive information and then proposed an attention mechanism based on radar guidance information to extract the vehicle ROI. Zhao et al 30 introduced a residual structure to fully retain the shallow detail information of small infrared target vehicles.…”
