Traffic Measurement and Analysis of Building Automation and Control Networks

Abstract: Abstract. This paper proposes a framework for a flow-based network traffic monitoring of building automation and control networks. Current approaches to monitor special environment networks are limited to checking accessibility and a state of monitored devices. On the other hand, current generation of flow-based network monitoring tools focuses only on the IP traffic. These tools do not allow to observe special protocols used, for example, in an intelligent building network. We present a novel approach based o… Show more

“…The IPFIXcol with an effective storage data format can be used for monitoring high-speed networks. By changing the storage data format or an internal processing plugin to support specific information fields, the IPFIXcol can be effectively used for monitoring research and non-standard environments such as building management or SCADA networks [9].…”

“…Traffic flow measurement has been known in IP networks for quite some time, but observing the traffic flow in BACnet networks has been done only recently [9]. The methods were later improved in [13] to include entropy-based analysis of the traffic flow.…”

“…An IP traffic flow-based network monitoring tool was extended by a BACnet stack for the analysis of the BACnet traffic , see [2]. A monitoring device (probe) acts as a passive listener on central nodes of the BMS network and monitors most of the network traffic occurring in the network by inspection of Ethernet frames.…”
