This article describes the safety and effectiveness issues related to signal countdown timers (SCT). These devices are used in many countries around the world. The impact of these devices on road safety and the effectiveness of traffic lights is presented. During a literature review, more than 18 aspects of device use were recognized. The research involved measurements carried out at three intersections in Płock (Poland). The initial and final period of the green signal for vehicles was analyzed. Headways, incidences of vehicles passing through after the end of the green signal, and red-light violations were examined. Additionally, a fuel consumption analysis and a case study of a road crash in Szczecin (Poland) are presented. Problems related to signal countdown timers working during traffic light failure are described. The research shows different influences of signal countdown timers at various intersections. It was observed that SCTs increase the number of red-light violations and during the red-amber signal. On the other hand, the number of entries during the amber signal with SCTs is lower. A literature review also indicated that the use of SCT causes a reduction of start-up time (positive impact) and increases vehicle speed (negative impact). The article concludes that SCTs do not always fulfill their role in improving road safety and control efficiency. Conclusions can address various stakeholders, including drivers, road authorities, and traffic engineers.

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is a commonly used technology used in various applications such as inventory readers, body counters, marathon race tagging, and the like. The research to be performed in this paper aims to study how RFID systems can help ease traffic through the monitoring of vehicles and possibly be implemented into more advanced systems to deliver information to the masses for further use of remote monitoring and traffic management. Different sizes of RFID tags or antennas are to be tested and used to determine the efficiency of signal propagation in vehicles once the tag enters the RFID reader's range. Effectiveness will be measured by picking up signals from vehicles at the minimum radius for a lower cost. The environment will be simulated via MATLAB Simulink. The system will consist of a reader and a tag, where the reader serves as the detector, while the tag serves as the object of detection. In the simulated environment, the system will also take note of the different noises encountered in the channel which is present in real life such as multipath fading.

Improving safety is one of the most important tasks of traffic engineering. In the road network, intersections are the places where conflicts most often occur. Therefore, these objects are of particular interest to engineers, designers and researchers. The possibilities of using modern technologies give a chance not only to achieve greater traffic efficiency, but also to ensure safe passing for all road users. One of such solutions are countdown timers, i.e. support devices for traffic lights which show the time (in seconds) remaining before the currently displayed signal on traffic light change. In some Polish cities those devices are installed on a growing number of intersections. However, the introduction of such new solutions without prior examination of their impact on safety is not recommended. The use of countdown timers at signalized intersections changes the way traffic control signals are perceived by drivers. To compare the impact of the device on the behavior of drivers, three different intersections have been selected depending on the function of the intersection in the transportation network. The measurements were made in two periods of research: for a week with enabled and disabled countdown timer devices. This article is a continuation of the previous research work carried out by the authors on determining the impact of the countdown timers on traffic conditions. The aim of this article is to show results of the analysis of the time distribution of vehicles entering the crossroads during the red signal for different type of the intersections. The results of the case study show that the countdown timer devices improve safety. Depending on types of intersections during the research with the enabled countdown timers from 22,65% to 32,03% less of the vehicles drove into the crossroads in a prohibited period.
