Traffic-aware user association in heterogeneous LTE/WiFi radio access networks

Abstract: WiFi networks are known to be a cost-efficient traffic offloading solution for mobile networks. The Multi Access Packet Data Network Connectivity is a feature introduced in LTE Release 10 in order to allow users to be simultaneously connected to multiple radio access networks (RAN). Although this feature brings many advantages, such as the possibility to implement QoS-based traffic steering, it poses also many challenges, one of which is distributing traffic among the two radio access technologies. In this pap… Show more

“…For example, a given scheduling algorithm could be optimized for a uniform distribution of clients across the sectors of a mobile cell. This work resulted in the 5G-EmPOWER platform [80], which has been used for several resource allocation problems in wireless and mobile networks [81]- [86].…”

“…A large number of open issues remain, including, but not limited to, the development of more generic solutions, better support for mobility, the use of multi-criteria decision functions, supporting different QoS classes and the increase of QoS during or after handovers [25]. More recently, Harutyunyan et al introduce an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) formulation for traffic-aware balancing devices across LTE and Wi-Fi infrastructures [27]. Moreover, in light of the proposed New Radio principle for 5G networks interest has grown in handover and load balancing approaches for millimeter-wave communications [28,29].…”
