Interaction between humans, nature, and culture creates a cultural landscape that provides various benefits. The pressure and threat to the existence of the cultural landscape is getting higher. This study aims to identify and analyze the diversity of cultural landscapes and determine potency of sustainable tourism development based on cultural landscape in rural area of Lombok Island, Indonesia. The area inhabited by the Sasak tribe is a rural area with ditinctive pattern of spatial organization. Kinds of cultural landscapes observed in this research are ricefield (bangket), settlement (gubuk) and homegarden (leah), meadow (gumi pupak), garden (kebon), and forest (gawah) and sacred area (simbit). Research findings indicate that the cultural landscape of the Sasak tribe in rural of Lombok Island is the traditional settlements that are built and depend on the biodiversity and its environment. Sasak people in rural of Lombok Island still maintain the cultural traditions. Through their involvement in this area, Sasak people can carry out the preservation of their cultural landscape. The development of cultural landscape as sustainable tourism can play an important role in preserving regional cultural values as a national cultural asset, preserving plant diversity and landscape, and improving the welfare of local communities.

The protections for culture, natural environment and aesthetic are widely recognised as a part of sustainability. The cultural landscape were characterised by the traditional norms of the society and physical civilisation manifested in local wisdoms creating the traditional landscape and architecture. This study aimed to reconstruct the use of landscape as part of local culture representing the ancient Javanese civilization (9th to 15th century) in the Brantas River Basin. This study found how the Javanese cosmology was applied on a regional scale of space. According to the character of spatial use as well as its physical and social materials, the space of the ancient Javanese region consisted of three zones, namely: the Lower, Central and the Upper Zones. This findings was a model of local wisdom in the regional scale, as a counterpart of the contemporary notion of urban development that conceives the lanscape as a capital asset.

Sustainable livable housing: A review of what traditional urban areas residents find important

Sustainable livable housing is pre-condition for healthy living, improve quality of life and critical to economic and social survival. It also encompasses various aspects that predominantly depend on economic, social, cultural and environmental (ESCE) conditions within the locality. To this end, this paper seeks to explore, classify and assess the sustainable livable housing attributes from the existing literatures through content analysis. A review of literature revealed a total of ninety two (92) constructs, which were further grouped nine (9) livable housing-related attributes groups. Well-structured questionnaires were administered to residents of traditional urban areas (TUA) of Iwo Osun State, Nigeria with ninety two (92) constructs on Likert scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic and relative importance index (RII). Out of (92) constructs from nine (9) livable housing-related attributes groups, the results identified seventy eight (78) important attributes (i.e. 35 most important and 43 important) across groups and construct that TUA residents found important. Over RII was 0.409 for overall assessment of sustainable livable housing condition by TUA residents indicating that TUA residents are dissatisfied with their current housing conditions.
