Traditional Decoction and PUAE Aqueous Extracts of Pomegranate Peels as Potential Low-Cost Anti-Tyrosinase Ingredients

Abstract: The aim of the study is to evaluate the anti-tyrosinase activity of different aqueous extracts obtained from pomegranate juice processing by-products. External pomegranate peels of two certified cultivars (Akko and Wonderful), were extracted using only water as the extraction solvent. A traditional decoction and a pulsed ultrasound-assisted extraction (PUAE), both 10 min long, were performed and compared. All the aqueous extracts proved to be rich in bioactive compounds. In particular, the total phenolic conte… Show more

“…EA is a phenolic component that is used to protect skin against oxidative stress [ 78 ]. EA is currently approved as a lightening ingredient for cosmetic formulations due to its ability to chelate copper ions that are present in tyrosinase enzymes, which are the main enzymes catalyzing the production of melanin [ 79 ].…”

“…Punica granatum (pomegranate) ( Table 1 ) contains ellagic acid, punicalagin, and punicic acid. The ellagic acid and punicalagin enhance skin health by impeding tyrosinase and promoting antifungal and anti-inflammatory effects [ 163 , 164 , 165 ]. In addition, punicic acid acts against UV-induced radiation [ 166 ].…”
