We explore dynamic non-stationarity panel data estimators namely, mean group (MG) and pooled mean group (PMG) for investigating the extent to which trade policies such as trade liberalisation and tariff rates matter to trade performance using the case of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).We found that increasing tariffs has the potential of particularly worsening export growth in SSA but increasing openness via liberalisation policy is likely to spur decline in the import dependence of the SSA economy. Thus, we concluded that while trade liberalisation seems to exhibit no significant impact on export growth in SSA, the same policy may yet be explored to encourage decline in the region's import activities, particularly those import activities that might threaten the growth of domestic industries.

We argue for a new approach to examining the relationship between tariffs and growth. We demonstrate that more can be learned from time series analyses of the experience of individual countries rather than the usual panel data approach, which imposes a causal relation and presents an average coefficient for all countries. Tentative initial results using simple two variable cointegrated VAR models suggest considerable heterogeneity in the experiences of the countries we look at. For most, however, there was a negative relationship between tariffs and levels of income for both the preand post-Second World War periods. However, in the second half of the twentieth century, the causality ran from income to tariffs: i.e. countries simply liberalized as they got richer. Policy decisions based on the usual panel approach might thus be very inappropriate for individual countries. Multinationals, international business, and poverty: A cross-disciplinary research overview and conceptual framework

This article examines the role of multinationals and international business in poverty alleviation, based on an analysis of articles in the top journals in business, economics, and policy. We develop a conceptual cross-disciplinary framework that maps and disentangles the impact of different types of international business activities on five dimensions of poverty, moderated by country and industry effects. While our study suggests that the impact of all the types of business activities on poverty is still unclear overall, we contribute to research and policy debates by identifying key insights from and main gaps in this cross-disciplinary stream of literature. A distinction is made between firm effects as part of both 'mainstream' and 'responsible' globalization, and firmspecific activities with and without the explicit goal of poverty alleviation, considering investment and trade. We propose areas for further research based on the framework, including the importance of interaction effects and contextual factors.
