Trade Facilitation and Export Diversification

Abstract: This paper shows that improved trade facilitation can help promote export diversification in developing countries. We find that 10 per cent reductions in the costs of international transport and domestic exporting costs (documentation, inland transport, port and customs charges) are associated with export diversification gains of 4 and 3 per cent, respectively, in a sample of 118 developing countries. Customs costs play a particularly important role in these results. Lower market entry costs can also promote d… Show more

“…Using similar empirical setups by employing the number of exported products as a measure of the extensive margin, Dennis and Shepherd (2011) and Persson (2012) both find evidence that inefficient trade procedures is associated with fewer export products. Persson (2012) further illustrates that -consistent with the theoretical treatment in Chaney (2008) -this negative effect is more _________________________ 13 See Table 2 in the Appendix for a short description of all empirical studies mentioned in this section.…”

Dennis and Shepherd (2011) showed that international trade promotes export diversification in developing countries. Haddad, Lim, Panero, and Saborowski (2013) showed that diversification does not promote growth.…”
