Trade Dynamics in the Italian Floriculture Sector within EU Borders: A Gravity Model Analysis

Abstract: Despite its economic magnitude worldwide, the scientific attention to the floriculture sector remains scarce within the borders of the European Union. Focusing on Italy, the aim of this paper is to provide an insight into the floriculture trade for the first time. More specifically, in addition to describing trade dynamics of the floriculture sector both in Italy and in the European Union in recent years, this paper applies a gravity model to investigate and evaluate the role of some major economic and geograp… Show more

“…The reference market for these subsectors is quite diversified as well. The floriculture industry is mainly pointed toward domestic consumption since its products are especially purchased for expression of love or friendship, thankfulness or appreciation, aesthetical purposes, gifts for events [2]. Nursery stock is oriented toward landscaping and lawn services, turning to designers, garden centres, gardeners, and maintenance firms among others [3].…”

“…Worldwide the main markets are Europe, the USA, and Japan [2], and, among EU countries, Germany is the most important market for the ornamental sector, considering a volume of around 8.9 billion euros in terms of retail prices [4]. On the other hand, the both the environment, soil/growing media, and eco-physiological parameters allows the implementation of a predictive and real-time decision support system (DSS), improving the efficient use of resources, such as water and nutrients, and directly controlling plant growth, health, and yield [10].…”

“…The gravity model represents a kind of spatial interaction model and can be used to calculate the number of interactions between two countries. The fundamental idea behind spatial interaction models is that the degree of interaction between two countries is a function of the degrees of concentration of people or things in the two countries, and a measure of the distance separating these countries (Cardoso, Rasetti, Giampietri, Finco & Shikida, 2017).…”

“…Rhythm of the production process of growing flowers in greenhouse farms depends on a rationally organized process of selling products, its planning and dynamism through organized sales channels, both to local markets and to global ones [18]. Proposed sales channels for finished products from the greenhouse complex of JSC "Sukhovskiy": opening of its own flower shop, point sale; making contracts with intermediaries; building contractual relationships with firms participating in the local flower market; sale through trade and retail networks; implementation via the Internet, "promoting" through popular social networks.…”
