Practical optical system design taking into account environmental factors is highly desirable. However it is in general a time consuming process which requires a massive iterations of numerical simulations. This is also one of the bottle necks of optical design for angular multiplexed holographic data storage system. To develop a practical method to evaluate effect of vibrations on signal quality, three-dimensional vibration model is developed which enables evaluation of vibration effect on normalized intensity level by using a single statistical figure of merit. Such single figure of meritis adopted to design a robust and efficient write strategy. The write strategy is applicable for wide range of vibration waveforms to increase write data transfer rate. Also optimum optical system parameters for angular multiplexed and monocular optical system are identified while maximizing tolerances of vibrations by applying the developed method. We propose NA 0.54 and pixel pitch 6.9m which can improve capacity and data transfer rate to 119% and 110% respectively compared to NA 0.6 reference design while keeping vibration margin as nearly identical to that of the reference design.

We report on the effective optical response of a uniaxial crystal of metal-dielectric-metal nanosandwiches, which exhibits artificial optical magnetism, through full-electrodynamic simulations by the extended layer-multiple-scattering method. Using a recently developed all-angle homogenization procedure, which is based on rigorous results of complex-band-structure and reflection-coefficient calculations, we deduce local effective permittivity and permeability tensors, appropriate for this crystal. We show that the effective-medium description breaks down as we approach the region of the magnetic resonance. In a frequency region close to the resonance the retrieved effective parameters, though doubtful, indicate that the crystal under consideration may exhibit negative refraction. This behaviour is demonstrated by rigorous calculation of the isofrequency surfaces of the actual crystal and determination of the relevant group velocities.
