Tracking mineral and geochemical characteristics of Holocene lake sediments: the case of Hotagen, west-central Sweden

Abstract: Purpose Intact lake sediments reflect the development of terrestrial ecosystems. This development can be understood by decoding mineral and geochemical information of sedimentary archives. Therefore, we characterized a Holocene lake sediment core and revealed bulk to micro-scale variations via a combination of geochemical techniques and statistical methods. Methods A 2.3 m sediment core was collected from Hotagen, a lake in west-central Sweden; a sediment … Show more

“…One is SiO 2 with a quartz structure and the other is CaCO 3 . As the sampling depth increases, mineral phases of kaolinite, muscovite, mullite, and anhydrite also appear [ 3 ]. In lakes, the surface layer of sediment is usually hydrated at about 80–95%.…”

“…Minerogenic wavenumbers were removed to make the comparison with the organic pyrolytic data more intuitive and because approaches for qualitative and quantitative analysis of mineral matter with MIR has been done elsewhere (e.g. Hahn et al, 2018; Kanbar et al, 2021; Martínez Cortizas et al, 2021a). Their removal does not affect the order of the organic components nor which components the wavenumbers load on, with the exception of one wavenumber for Dragsjön and four for Lång-Älgsjön.…”

“…Only then will it be possible to identify ingredients of allochthonous origin, autogenic ingredients and minerals of biogenic origin (Ewing, Nater 2003;Rydelek 2013;Kalińska-Nartiša, Gałka 2018). As a result, the multitude of distinguished components translates into a high diversity of types of biogenic sediments in the temperate climate zone (Borówka 2007;Kanbar et al 2021), and as many researchers correctly claim (Sobczyński, Siepak 1998;Woszczyk, Spychalski 2013) is a reason to distinguish and quantify the forms in which metals occur in reservoir sediments.…”
