Tracking, erosion and thermal distribution of micro‐AlN + nano‐SiO 2 co‐filled silicone rubber for high‐voltage outdoor insulation

Abstract: Thermal depolymerisation induced tracking and erosion of polymeric insulators is one of the key insulation failure modes and this process adversely affects the reliability of power delivery networks. This study reports the tracking, erosion and thermal distribution of micron-AlN and micron-AlN + nano-SiO 2 co-filled silicone rubber composites. A tracking-erosion model is presented to explain how the co-filled set of particles directly affects such mechanisms. Aluminium nitride (AlN: 5-10 μm) and silica (SiO 2 … Show more

“…All the samples experienced arcing on their surface because of the contaminant and high voltage stress. The carbon tracks and pits were formed between the HV electrode and ground electrode due to continuous arcing on the surface of samples [27]. The samples having least amount of tracking and pitting among all are shown in figure 16 and the ones with highest amount of tracking and pitting are shown in figure 17.…”

“…Silicone rubber (SR) has been widely used in high-voltage outdoor insulation due to the excellent hydrophobicity and weather-resistance [1][2][3]. Fillers are added into the pure SR to improve specific properties as well as to reduce cost [4][5][6]. So far, alumina tri-hydrate (ATH) is the most commonly used filler in the SR composite insulator [7,8].…”

“…The most common NPs investigated in literature are Aluminum Tri-hydride (ATH) [7][8][9] and silica (SiO 2 ) [10,11]. Aluminum Nitride (AlN) [12,13], Aluminum hydroxide Al(OH) 3 [14] , Boron Nitride (BN) [13,15], barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ) [16] and alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) [17] are also investigated in few studies.…”

“…The addition of nano-SiO 2 rapidly conducts heat out in the air and suppresses the temperature rise in the discharge zone and hence improves the thermal stability and chemical bonding in the interaction region of SiR which results in the improvement of resistance against tracking and erosion. A comparison study was carried out in [12] in which two different compositions were made. In first composition micro-AlN was added to SiR.…”
