Tracing the footsteps of open research data in China

Abstract: While the scientific research value, economic value and social value of research data have become increasingly apparent, the significance of open research data has reached a consensus. This article gives an introduction to open research data policies and measures in China, and reports on the status of constructing necessary infrastructure, specifically open data repositories. We compare open data repositories in China and Western countries in terms of scale, subject distribution, data policies, service and con… Show more

“…Among the criteria for restricting sharing are whether the scientific data contain personal information or concern national security. The adherence to the privacy laws is supposed to be implemented at the level of the data center policies which are currently evolving (Li et al, 2022). The complex and domain specific regulatory framework and its consequences for international sharing has been mostly analyzed in the field of human genetic data where China has considerable data resources.…”

“…For example, as of 28 September 2021, there were over 1000 registered data repositories in the USA, 457 in Germany, and 300 in the UK. However, the current number of data repositories in China is only 48 (Li et al, 2022). Therefore, the FAIR principle requiring data to be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reproducible is proposed to guide scientists when sharing their research datasets, even in different repositories (Cannon et al, 2022; Koers et al, 2020).…”
