TRACE Observation of Damped Coronal Loop Oscillations: Implications for Coronal Heating

Abstract: The imaging telescope on board the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) spacecraft observed the decaying transversal oscillations of a long [(130 +/- 6) x 10(6) meters], thin [diameter (2.0 +/- 0.36) x 10(6) meters], bright coronal loop in the 171 angstrom Fe(IX) emission line. The oscillations were excited by a solar flare in the adjacent active region. The decay time of the oscillations is 14.5 +/- 2.7 minutes for an oscillation with a frequency 3.90 +/- 0.13 millihertz. The coronal dissipation coe… Show more

Fast magnetoacoustic waves have been seen with TRACE (Aschwanden et al 1999(Aschwanden et al , 2002Nakariakov et al 1999;Wang & Solanki 2004) and Hinode (Ofman & Wang 2008). Non-thermal line narrowing / broadening due to Alfvén waves has been reported by Harrison et al (2002) / Erdélyi et al (1998), Banerjee et al (1998) and O'Shea et al (2003).…”

“…They have been detected with confidence ever since 1998 (Aschwanden et al 1999;Nakariakov et al 1999) in the form of transverse loop oscillations (TLOs). To date, more than 50 TLOs have been reported with periods ranging between 100 s and 3 h Wang & Solanki 2004;Verwichte et al 2004;Hori et al 2005Hori et al , 2007Van Doorsselaere et al 2007De Moortel & Brady 2007;Verwichte et al 2009Verwichte et al , 2010Mrozek 2011;Verwichte et al 2012).…”

“…After transverse oscillations of coronal magnetic loops were first observed by the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) spacecraft and reported by Aschwanden et al (1999) and Nakariakov et al (1999), they received ample attention from solar physicists. These oscillations have been interpreted as fast standing kink body waves in cylindrical magnetic flux tubes.…”
