Trace metal distribution in different chemical fractions of marine sediments along the eastern Aegean shelf

Abstract: The major objective of this study was to carry out sequential chemical extraction for the partitioning of particulate trace metals in sediment samples, collected along the eastern Aegean shelf during cruises July-August 1994, in the framework of a National Marine Measurement and Monitoring Programme for the Aegean Sea.Five metals, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn and Cr were examined in each of sediment samples. Three chemical fractions of the sediments were separated and concentrations of the trace metals were determined by AA… Show more

“…The values in the Outer Bay are similar the mean concentrations of heavy metals in the sediments from the Mediterranean and Aegean Sea [11][12][13][14][15]. The levels of metals are lower in the Inner Bay than polluted areas of Mediterranean Sea [16,17].…”

“…Several studies have been focused on sedimentology and geochemistry of sediments in the Aegean Sea (Ergin et al 1990;Yemenicioglu et al 1998;Karageorgis et al 1998;Batkı et al 1999;Kucuksezgin 2001;Sarı and Çagatay 2001;Stamatis et al 2002;Karageorgis et al 2005;Dalman et al 2006;Gavriil and Angelidis 2006;Kucuksezgin et al 2006). However, literature about its heavy metal concentrations from the eastern side of the Aegean Sea, along the Turkish coasts is scarce or limited.…”
