Monitoring particulate matter (PM) and its chemical constituents in classrooms is a subject of special concern within the scientific community in order to control and minimize child exposure. Regulatory sampling methods have presented several limitations in their application to larger number of classrooms due to operational and financial constraints. Consequently, passive sampling methodologies using filters were developed for indoor sampling. However, such methodologies could not provide parallel information for outdoors, which is important to identify pollution sources and assess outdoor contribution to the indoors. Therefore, biomonitoring with transplanted lichens, a technique usually applied for outdoor studies, was used both indoor and outdoor of classrooms. Three main objectives were proposed, to (i) characterize simultaneously indoor and outdoor of classrooms regarding inorganic air pollutants, (ii) investigate spatial patterns of lichen conductivity, and (iii) assess pollution sources that contribute to a poor indoor air quality in schools. Lichens Flavoparmelia caperata were transplanted to indoor and outdoor of classrooms for 59 d. After exposure, electric conductivity of lichens leachate was measured to evaluate lichen vitality and cell damage. Outdoors lichen conductivity was higher near the main highways, and indoors there was great variability in levels, which indicates different emissions sources and different ventilation patterns. Chemical content of lichens was assessed by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), and As, Br, Ca, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Eu, Fe, Hf, K, La, Na, Rb, Sb, Sc, Sm, Sr, Ta, Th, Yb, and Zn were determined. Element accumulation, crustal enrichment factors, and spatial variability of elements were analyzed and contaminants from anthropogenic sources, such as traffic (As, Sb, and Zn) and indoor chalk (Ca) found. Classrooms with potential indoor air quality problems were identified by presenting higher accumulations of inorganic pollutants in exposed biomonitors.

Honey is a natural product of high nutritional and therapeutic value. Western of Pará State is a very promising beekeeping region, but the number of dealers who adulterate at least one of the produ t's ph si o he i al hara teristi s i reases as the eekeeping activity grows. Accordingly, the aim of the present study is to assess the quality of 09 samples of Jandaíra (Melipona compressipes manaoensis and Melipona seminigra) honey and 22 samples of Apis mellifera available for sale in west Pará, Brazil. It was observed that only 01 sample of honey from Jandaíra and 11 of Apis mellifera had all the assessed physicochemical parameters in compliance with the Brazilian legislation. With regard to the antioxidant activity against the DPPH radical, most of the samples had maximum inhibition values above 50% and such activity was greater in the darker staining samples. Finally, it was noteworthy that the adulterated honey or the honey outside the standard specifications lost their beneficial properties and shelf life longevity. Thus, its close monitoring in free and local markets is demanding.Keywords: Antioxidant activity; Moisture; Reducing sugars; Ashes; Color. ResumoO mel é um produto natural de alto valor nutricional e terapêutico, sendo a região oeste do Pará muito promissora na atividade apícola. Uma vez que esta atividade vem crescendo, aumenta também o número de comerciantes que adulteram o produto em pelo menos uma de suas características físico-químicas. Neste contexto, no presente trabalho foi avaliada a qualidade de 09 amostras de mel de Jandaíra (Melipona compressipes manaosensis e Melipona seminigra) e 22 amostras de mel de Apis mellifera comercializados na região oeste do Pará, Brasil. Dentre os parâmetros físico-químicos avaliados (cor, pH, teor de umidade, cinzas e açúcares redutores) observou-se que apenas 01 amostra de mel de Jandaíra e 11 de Apis mellifera apresentaram todos os parâmetros físico-químicos avaliados em acordo com a legislação brasileira. Em relação à atividade antioxidante frente ao radical DPPH, a maioria das amostras apresentou valores de inibição máximos acima de 50%, sendo esta atividade maior para as amostras de coloração mais escuras. Por fim, vale ressaltar que méis adulterados ou fora dos padrões implicam na perda de suas propriedades benéficas e diminuição de sua vida de prateleira, logo é necessária uma fiscalização maior do comércio deste produto em feiras e mercados locais.
