Trace elements determination in edible seaweeds by an optimized and validated ICP-MS method

Abstract: An optimized and validated inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method was used to analyze trace elements in seaweeds. Different volumes and rates of HNO 3 and H 2 O 2 , digestion times, and microwave power levels were tested to ascertain the best conditions for sample digestion. Analytical mass and instrumental parameters were selected to assure accurate and precise determination of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, and V by ICP-MS. The method was optimized and validated using biological Ce… Show more

“…A 0.5000 AE 0.0001 g portion of each sample was then weighed and introduced into a high-pressure, closed, Teflon decomposition vessel. Five millilitres of 4.5:0.5 HNO 3 and H 2 O 2 (v/v) mixture were carefully added to each sample and the vessels were gently shaken, sealed and digested in microwave oven under previously optimized operating conditions (Ró denas de la Rocha et al, 2009). Digested samples were transferred to a 50 mL volumetric flask and made up to volume with deionised water.…”

“…Mineral and trace elements In order to digest and extract mineral and trace elements from seaweed samples, methods from Larrea-Marin et al (2010) and Rodenas de la Rocha et al (2009) were modified and applied. Approximately 500 mg of dried sample was weighed and placed into a 50-mL glass tube.…”

“…For the detection of iodine content in algae, wet biofilm samples were rinsed with distilled water and dried at 110 • C overnight. 0.2 g dry algal biofilm solid was digested following a procedure reported by Ródenas de la Rocha et al (2009). After digestion, iodide content in the liquid was measured by Ion Chromatography with an AS-18 column from Dionex.…”
