Although orthopyroxene (Opx) is present during a wide range of magmatic differentiation processes in the terrestrial and lunar mantle, its effect on melt trace element contents is not well quantified. We present results of a combined experimental and computational study of trace element partitioning between Opx and anhydrous silicate melts. Experiments were performed in air at atmospheric pressure and temperatures ranging from 1,326 to 1,420°C in the system CaO-MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 and subsystem CaOMgO-SiO 2 . We provide experimental partition coefficients for a wide range of trace elements (large ion lithophile: Li, Be, B, K, Rb, Sr, Cs, Ba, Th, U; rare earth elements, REE: La, $ 0:058, and are all virtually independent of temperature. Cr and Co are the only compatible trace elements at the studied conditions. To elucidate charge-balancing mechanisms for incorporation of REE into Opx and to assess the possible influence of Fe on Opx-melt partitioning, we compare our experimental results with computer simulations. In these simulations, we examine major and minor trace element incorporation into the end-members enstatite (Mg 2 Si 2 O 6 ) and ferrosilite (Fe 2 Si 2 O 6 ). Calculated solution energies show that R 2? cations are more soluble in Opx than R 3? cations of similar size, consistent with experimental partitioning data. In addition, simulations show charge balancing of R 3? cations by coupled substitution with Li ? on the M1 site that is energetically favoured over coupled substitution involving Al-Si exchange on the tetrahedrally coordinated site. We derived best-fit values for ideal ionic radii r 0 , maximum partition coefficients D 0 , and apparent Young's moduli E for substitutions onto the Opx M1 and M2 sites. Experimental r 0 values for R 3? substitutions are 0.66-0.67 Å for M1 and 0.82-0.87 Å for M2. Simulations for enstatite result in r 0 = 0.71-0.73 Å for M1 and *0.79-0.87 Å for M2. Ferrosilite r 0 values are systematically larger by *0.05 Å for both M1 and M2. The latter is opposite to experimental literature data, which appear to show a slight decrease in r M2 0 in the presence of Fe. Additional systematic studies in Febearing systems are required to resolve this inconsistency and to develop predictive Opx-melt partitioning models for use in terrestrial and lunar magmatic differentiation models.

[1] In the Garibaldi Belt, the northern segment of the Cascade arc, basalts at Bridge River Cones, Salal Glacier, and Mt. Meager (BSM volcanic centers) are alkalic, atypical for an arc setting. Subduction signatures are negligible or absent from primitive alkalic basalts from Salal Glacier and Bridge River, while altered oceanic crust may have contributed a minimal amount of fluid at Mt. Meager. More evolved BSM basalts display trace element signatures considered typical of arc lavas, but this is a consequence of deep crustal assimilation rather than primary input from the subducted slab. Primary BSM basalts represent 3-8% melts that segregated from enriched garnet lherzolite at significantly higher temperatures and pressures (70-105 km) than calc-alkaline Cascade arc basalts. The BSM mantle source is significantly more incompatible element-enriched than the depleted mantle tapped by calc-alkaline Cascade arc basalts. The BSM basalts are also isotopically distinct from calc-alkaline Cascade arc basalts, more similar to MORB and intraplate basalts of the NE Pacific and NW North America. The relatively deep, hot, and geochemically distinct mantle source for BSM basalts is consistent with upwelling asthenosphere. The BSM volcanic centers are close to the projected trace of the Nootka fault, which forms the boundary between the subducting Juan de Fuca plate and the near-stagnant Explorer plate. A gap or attenuated zone between the plates may promote upwelling of enriched asthenosphere that undergoes low-degree decompression melting to generate alkalic basalts that are essentially free of slab input yet occur in an arc setting.

Neoarchean suprasubduction zone magmatism in the Sonakhan greenstone belt, Bastar Craton, India: Implications for subduction initiation and melt extraction

The Neoarchean Sonakhan greenstone belt (SGB) in the north‐eastern Bastar Craton is mainly composed of an association of pillowed and massive tholeiitic basalts emplaced within an intraoceanic environment. Two types of ultrabasic rocks were identified and are designated as TH‐1 and TH‐2 on the basis of geochemical parameters. Both sample suites exhibit depletion of HFSE with reference to LILE and LREE, LREE/HFSE ratios, and negative Nb–Ta–Ti anomalies in the primitive mantle‐normalized multi‐element diagrams. The geochemical characters of TH‐1 and TH‐2 are consistent with Island arc tholeiites (IAT) and boninite‐like rocks of both Archean and Phanerozoic terranes. Mineral chemistry of clinopyroxenes from both volcanic suites indicate an oceanic arc affinity. The chromite chemistry indicate its derivation from a boninite‐like magma in a suprasubduction zone (SSZ) environment. Trace element modelling depicts that source depletion with significant influence of fluids derived from the subducting oceanic slab collectively controlled the trace element inventory of the mantle wedge, which result to the higher abundance of LREE and LILE compared to HREE and HFSE. The occurrence of lower basalt sequence followed by IAT and boninite‐like rocks in the SGB define a magmatic evolution which is comparable to the Phanerozoic ophiolite suites that exhibit subduction initiation prior to forearc rifting and suprasubduction zone magmatism. The subduction initiation in the intraoceanic lithosphere and the initial decompression melting followed by the upwelling of the MORB‐related magmas were attributed to the formation of the lower pillow basalts. Dehydration of the subducting plate and the melt extraction processes in the hydrous lherzolite mantle wedge account for the formation of TH‐1. Subsequent depletion and significant modification of a more refractory harzburgite source by the slab‐derived fluids generated the TH‐2 rocks. The compositionally diverse magmatic imprints with IAT and boninite affinity in the SGB indicate the significance of episodic melt extraction processes, dehydration of the subducting plate, and hydrous fluxing in SSZ tectonic setting.
