Trace Element Determinations with Synchrotron-Induced X-Ray Emission

Abstract: X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis has played an important role in elemental chemical analysis for many years. The synchrotron radiation (SR) X-ray source that has been developed in the last 10-20 years represents a revolutionary improvement in X-ray production technology. By using SR for XRF analysis, researchers can make measurements with improved sensitivity and spatial resolution. Results obtained with SR show that measurements with a spatial resolution of less than 100 pm2 and a minimum detection limit (MDL… Show more

“…The measurements have been carried out at the National Synchrotron Light Source, beam line X-26A, located at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (NY, USA). 13 The fluorescence spectra were recorded with a 30 mm 2 Si (Li) detector mounted at 90°to the incident X-ray beam. The sample position was defined by a stepper motor-driven sample stage (minimum step size: 1 m 2 ) and monitored with a microscope equipped with a video camera.…”

“…PIXE (Johansson and Campbell, 1988) and SRIXE (Jones and Gordon, 1989) have similar imaging capabilities and detection limits but both suffer from the drawback that they rely on major pieces of hardware, an accelerator in the PIXE experiment and a synchrotron X-ray source for SRIXE.…”

“…There was also the introduction of micro-versions of some old and well-known branches of X-Ray Spectroscopy, e.g. micro-diffraction, micro-tomography and micro-fluorescence [2]. Normally these kinds of analytical X-ray methods are limited to the synchrotron radiation sources.…”
