Trace amines produced by skin bacteria accelerate wound healing in mice

Abstract: Certain skin bacteria are able to convert aromatic amino acids (AAA) into trace amines (TA) that act as neuromodulators. Since the human skin and sweat contain a comparatively high content of AAA one can expect that such bacteria are able to produce TA on our skin. Here we show that TA-producing Staphylococcus epidermidis strains expressing SadA are predominant on human skin and that TA accelerate wound healing. In wounded skin, keratinocytes produce epinephrine (EPI) that leads to cell motility inhibition by … Show more

“…This may reinforce the hypothesis that the excreted TA interfere with host communication to improve the survival and colonization of the bacteria (Luqman et al, 2018(Luqman et al, , 2019. More recently it has been shown that TA-producing Staphylococcus epidermidis strains expressing SadA are predominant on human skin and that TA accelerate wound healing by antagonizing the β2-adrenergic receptor (β2-AR) in keratinocytes (Luqman et al, 2020b).…”

“…We show that the intestinal (Luqman et al, 2018) and skin microbiota is quite capable of increasing the concentration of TA, and that the increased TA concentration causes new activities and interactions with receptors. It has been shown already that TA interact with α2and β-AR and the biological consequences (Luqman et al, 2018(Luqman et al, , 2019(Luqman et al, , 2020b. But these are probably not the only receptors with which TA interact.…”

“…A more recent example in biofilm studies was the use of O47, along with other S. epidermidis strains to analyze the functions of non-coding RNA rsaE in biofilm communities ( Schoenfelder et al, 2019 ). In our latest findings, it was reported that a majority of skin S. epidermidis isolates express the staphylococcal aromatic amino acid decarboxylase (SadA) which enables the strains to produce trace amines from aromatic amino acids ( Luqman et al, 2020 ). sadA was first described in S. pseudintermedius ED99 ( Luqman et al, 2018 ) and this gene is also found in O47.…”
