Toys or Tools? Utilization of Unmanned Aerial Systems in Mosquito and Vector Control Programs

Abstract: Organized mosquito control programs (MCP) in the United States have been protecting public health since the early 1900s. These programs utilize integrated mosquito management for surveillance and control measures to enhance quality of life and protect the public from mosquito-borne diseases. Because much of the equipment and insecticides are developed for agriculture, MCP are left to innovate and adapt what is available to accomplish their core missions. Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are one such innovation th… Show more

“…Surveillance is a key component of any dengue prevention and control program. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently been used in mosquito control monitoring in many countries [7][8][9][10]. Although the UAV is a novel technology, it still lacks the ability to monitor and analyze urban sewers.…”
