Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic in Northern Tanzania

Abstract: BackgroundAcute Toxoplasma gondii infection during pregnancy represents a risk for congenital disease, especially among women without previous exposure to infection. There is, however, a paucity of information about the epidemiology of T. gondii infection in pregnant women in Tanzania. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection and associated demographic, clinical, and behavioral risk factors in pregnant women attending ante-natal clinic (ANC) at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Cente… Show more

“…The results of UCB serologic testing showed a prevalence of 6% and 36% for anti‐ Toxoplasma IgM and IgG antibodies, respectively. These results are in accordance is with other reported prevalence among pregnant women from Egypt; 30.16% and 33.79% and also from other countries as 40.15% for IgG and 9% for IgM in Northern Tanzania, 41.3% for IgG in Iran, 32.5% for IgG and 6.4% for IgM in Saudi Arabia and 51% for IgG and 0% for IgM in Brazil . Results of PCR was 11% indicating active infection.…”

“…[29][30][31] However, other studies have reported higher seroprevalence in Brazil 77.5%, Columbia 63.5%, Algeria 47.8%, and Tanzania 44.5%. [32][33][34][35] Variations in seroprevalence among different countries could be explained by differences in geographical and climatic conditions, food habits, personal hygiene and management systems of food animals, all of which play important roles in the epidemiology of T. gondii infection.…”
