Toxoplasma gondii in domestic and wild animals from forest fragments of the municipality of Natal, northeastern Brazil

Abstract: Toxoplasmosis stands out as a global disease that has felines as definitive hosts. In the municipality of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil, two parks are notable for their ecological and social importance. This study aimed to investigate the presence of Toxoplasma gondii in short hair cats, bats and small non-volant mammals in these two ecological reserves. Altogether, biological samples were obtained from 154 mammals, 92 wild animals from both areas and 62 domestic cats of the Parque da Cidade. In tot… Show more

“…Antibodies to T. gondii were found in marsupials from different Brazilian regions (YAI et al, 2008;FORNAZARI et al, 2011;SIQUEIRA et al, 2013;GENNARI et al, 2015). YAI et al, 2008;FORNAZARI et al, 2011;SIQUEIRA, 2013;FOURNIER et al, 2014). This is the first study on the seroprevalence of T. gondii among opossums caught in the urban area of the municipality of Bauru, SP, and it highlights the need for environmental and health authorities of the municipality to monitor this zoonosis.…”

“…Ecological spillover in this context imagines inter-or intraspecific pathogen flow (and potential consequent impacts) from urban populations to wildland populations. Three of these papers specifically address directional transmission (Bradley, Gibbs and Altizer 2008;Broadfoot, Rosatte andO'Leary 2001, Riley, Foley andChomel 2004), and four indirectly suggest that ecological spillover dynamics are at play (Fournier et al 2014;Plowright et al 2011;Fiorello, Noss and Deem 2006;Goulson, Whitehorn, and Fowley 2012).…”

“…Although there may be a sizable literature on any one of these individual steps, as one moves through the spillover framework from urban to wildland populations, no studies explicitly link all framework nodes, though two studies allow for inference of spillover dynamics at work across all nodes (Catterall et al 2010;Fournier et al 2014) (see Table 1). As a result, we found no articles that discuss urban to wildland spillover directly.…”

“…Toxoplasma gondii naturally infects several species of marsupials and rodents, however, the frequencies of such infections can vary according to the region and the diagnostic technique used. Studies in Brazil have shown an infection rate ranging from 5.7% to 61.1% in wild rodents and from 4.7% to 63.6% in marsupials (Ferraroni & Marzochi, 1980;Salata et al, 1985;Yai et al, 2003;Cola et al, 2010, Costa et al, 2012Vitaliano et al, 2014;Fournier et al, 2014;Gennari et al, 2015;Abreu et al, 2016;Horta et al 2016). Research on this parasite in Chiroptera is even more scarce, although there are records in São Paulo (Cabral et al, 2013; showing more than 36.6% positives.…”
