Toxoplasma antibodies by indirect latex agglutination tests in National Seoul Mental Hospital patients

Abstract: A total of 573 patients hospitalized in National Seoul Mental Hospital and 76 of healthy persons as control were examined by indirect latex agglutination test in order to evaluate Toxoplasma antibody titers in mental patients. Throughout this survey, 1:32 or more titers of diluted sera were regarded as positive. The 573 samples of test sera showed negative in 386 cases (67.4 %), 1:2 in 93 cases (16.2 %), 1:4 in 57 cases (9.9 %), 1:8 in 14 cases (2.4 %), 1:16 in 12 cases (2.1 %), 1:32 in 5 cases (0.9 %), 1:64 i… Show more

“…The latex agglutination test (LAT) has been one of the most reliable diagnostic methods for toxoplasmosis for almost 4 decades [7,8,20]. However, its sensitivity has been estimated to be lower than that by ELISA both for serum and cerebrospinal fluid [11].…”

“…Concerning T. gondii prevalence in Korea, a study performed in 1960 reported a seropositive rate of 5.6% (Soh et al, 1960) and several studies performed during 1970 and 1989 reported seropositive rates of 1.9-14.3% (Nakayama et al, 1970;Choi et al, 1982;Kim and Choi, 1983;Choi et al, 1983Choi et al, , 1985Choi et al, , 1989. Two recent studies on pregnant women by ELISA reported that the seropositive rate was 7.0% (Im et al, 1991) and 4.3% (Ryu et al, 1996).…”

“…The idea that infection with T. gondii was associated with schizophrenia initially arose from clinical observations of patients infected with T. gondii , presenting with psychotic symptoms (Pariser, Zunich et al 1978; Choi, Yoo et al 1983; Torrey and Yolken 2003). Support for the hypothesis that T. gondii infection may have an etiological role in the development of Schizophrenia has come from numerous studies including: (1) epidemiological studies that have found an higher prevalence of antibodies to T. gondii toxoplasmosis in individuals with schizophrenia; (2).…”
