Toxicological analysis of the chronic consumption of diheptanoin and triheptanoin in rats

Abstract: The aim of this study was to synthesise glycerol esters from heptanoic acid and to evaluate the toxicity of their chronic consumption in rats. The synthesised product (64% triheptanoin, 34% diheptanoin and 2% monoheptanoin) was called experimental oil. Newly weaned male Wistar rats (n = 3 · 10) were fed with control diet AIN-93, control with 30% substitution of soybean oil with experimental oil (TAGC 7 30%) or control with substitution of 50% (TAGC 7 50%), for 9 months. The experimental oil did not affect the … Show more

“…As for the markers for hepatic function and injury, these findings confirm the data previously described by our group in rats, in which a partial substitution with trienantin for LCT in a standard diet [14] did not demonstrate alterations in the above parameters. Kono et al [39] observed a hepatoprotector effect of MCT in a group of animals fed with 5 g/kg of medium-chain fatty acids, which showed a reduced mortality rate on being infected with a Gram-negative bacterium.…”

“…It was demonstrated in a single study of toxicological evaluation in rats that trienantin in a normal-fat diet produced satisfactory coefficients of digestibility and feed efficiency, and no evidence was found of hepatotoxicity or alterations in intestinal or renal morphology, after 9 months [14]. Therefore, as in a few other studies, this indicated favorable evidence for the therapeutic use of trienantin.…”
