Toxicity Profile of a Nutraceutical Formulation Derived from Green MusselPerna viridis

Abstract: The short-term (acute) and long-term (subchronic) toxicity profile, mean lethal dose 50 (LD50), and no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of a nutraceutical formulation developed from green mussel Perna viridis, which showed in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory properties, were evaluated in the present study. The formulation was administered to the male and female Wistar rats at graded doses (0.5, 1.0, and 2.5 g/kg body weight) for two weeks of acute toxicity study and 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 g/kg body weight f… Show more

“…Mussel extract has been considered as a traditional food rich in glucosamines, chondroitans, and marine lipids to benefit joint health and mobility (Chakraborty, Chakkalakal, & Joseph, ). A nutraceutical formulation (Cadalmin™ Green Mussel extract) enriched with antiinflammatory principles was developed from the Asian green mussel (Chakraborty, Joseph, & Chakkalakal, ). Freeze‐dried mussel extract (Seatone ® ) prepared from P. canaliculus was found to inhibit inflammatory arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (McPhee et al, ).…”
