Algae are sensitive to a wide range of pollutants, and are effective bioindicators in ecotoxicity assessments. Here, we evaluated the sub-lethal sensitivity of the marine dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides upon exposure to copper (Cu), lead (Pb), bisphenol A (BPA), and Aroclor 1016 (polychlorinated biphenyl, PCB). Toxic effects were assessed by observations of the reduction in cell counts and chlorophyll a levels after exposure to each toxicant. C. polykrikoides displayed dose-dependent, sigmoidal responses when exposed to the tested chemicals. EC 50 -72 h values for Cu, Pb, BPA, and PCB were 12.74, 46.70, 68.15, and 1.07 mg L -1 , respectively. PCB, which is an endocrine-disrupting chemical, was the most sensitive, proving its toxic effect on the dinoflagellate. This study provides baseline data on the toxic effects of commonly used heavy metals and endocrine-disrupting chemicals to a marine dinoflagellate.

W problematyce oczyszczania ścieków coraz częściej zwraca się uwagę na zagrożenie zanieczyszczania wód powierzchniowych przez oczyszczone biologicznie ścieki odprowadzane do środowiska. Pomimo bardzo wysokiego stopnia obniże-nia wskaźników zanieczyszczeń w procesie mechaniczno-biologicznego oczyszczania ścieków, odpływy z oczyszczalni zawierają toksyczne mikrozanieczyszczenia, których rodzaj i stężenie nie jest dotychczas w żaden sposób kontrolowane. Należą do nich między innymi związki o estrogenicznej aktywności biologicznej (ang. Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals), których już śladowe ilości zakłó-cają funkcjonowanie układu hormonalnego człowieka. Dlatego też przedmiotem uwagi staje się pogłębione oczyszczanie ścieków, które pozwala wyeliminować problem migracji mikrozanieczyszczeń do środowiska. Jednym z proponowanych rozwiązań jest zastosowanie procesu nanofiltracji, umożliwiającego zatrzymanie niskocząsteczkowych związków organicznych. Zasadniczym problemem w trakcie realizacji technik membranowych jest zjawisko foulingu, które zakłóca przebieg procesu. Z jednej strony powlekanie powierzchni membrany warstwą zanieczyszczeń skutkuje wzrostem ich retencji, jednak z drugiej powoduje znaczne obniżenie wydajności procesu. W prezentowanej pracy badano wpływ czasu prowadzenia nanofiltracji na efektywność doczyszczania ścieków komunalnych i wydajność procesu. Stopień doczyszczania ścieków oceniano w oparciu o obniżenie stężenia bisfenolu A oraz wartości podstawowych wskaźników zanieczyszczeń charakteryzujących ścieki oczyszczone. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że stopień obniżenia wartości organicznych wskaźników zanieczyszczeń wzrastał wraz ze wzrostem stopnia odzysku permeatu. Zaobserwowano również 27% obniżenie końcowej wydajności procesu w stosunku do początkowej.
