Effects of an insecticidal soap on the survival, development and reproduction of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, were studied. Twenty-four hours after application at a concentration of 37.50 g L-1, the soap caused 100% mortality in all aphid instars, and LC50 (lethal concentrations causing 50% mortality in the population) were 1.50, 3.25 and 5.50 g L-1 for first and second instars, third and fourth instars, and adult M. persicae, respectively. Aphids that survived the LC50 had a shorter longevity than the controls. Both insecticidal soap and parasitoids could be used on a crop but, as the LC50 of the third and fourth instars and adult M. persicae are higher than that of the aphid parasitoid Aphidius colemani (2.75 g L-1), it is essential to avoid treating aphids with insecticidal soap when adult parasitoids are present in the crop.Les effets d'un savon insecticide sur la survie, le développement et la fécondité du puceron vert du pêcher, Myzus persicae, ont été étudiés. Vingt-quatre heures après son application à une concentration de 37,50 g L-1, le savon a causé 100 % de mortalité chez tous les stades de pucerons et les CL50 (concentrations létales causant 50 % de mortalité dans la population) pour M. persicae étaient de 1,50, 3,25 et 5,50 g L-1 pour les premier et deuxième stades, pour les troisième et quatrième stades et pour le stade adulte, respectivement. Les pucerons ayant survécu aux CL50 n'ont pas vécu aussi longtemps que ceux du traitement témoin. Il est possible d'utiliser le savon insecticide et des parasitoïdes sur des cultures, mais comme les CL50 des troisième et quatrième stades et des adultes de M. persicae sont plus élevées que celles du parasitoïde Aphidius colemani (2,75 g L-1), il est important de ne traiter les pucerons avec du savon que lorsque les parasitoïdes adultes sont absents de la culture

Capsaicin β-glucoside was isolated from the feces of Helicoverpa armigera, Helicoverpa assulta, and Helicoverpa zea that fed on capsaicin-supplemented artificial diet. The chemical structure was identified by NMR spectroscopic analysis as well as by enzymatic hydrolysis. The excretion rates of the glucoside were different among the three species; those in the two generalists, H. armigera and H. zea, were higher than in a specialist, H. assulta. UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGT) enzyme activities measured from the whole larval homogenate of the three species with capsaicin and UDP-glucose as substrates were also higher in the two generalists. Compared among five different larval tissues (labial glands, testes from male larvae, midgut, the Malpighian tubules (MT), and fat body) from the three species, the formation of the capsaicin glucoside by one or more UGT is high in the fat body of all the three species as expected, as well as in H. assulta MT. Optimization of the enzyme assay method is also described in detail. Although the lower excretion rate of the unaltered capsaicin in H. assulta indicates higher metabolic capacity toward capsacin than in the other two generalists, the glucosylation per se seems to be insufficient to explain the decrease in capsaicin in the specialist, suggesting that H. assulta might have another important mechanism to deal with capsaicin more specifically.

Aphids are one of the major pests in agricultural crops. A number of synthetic pesticides have been used for control of aphids in agriculture, but increasing public concerns over their adverse effects on the environment have required more environmentally-friendly methods for pest management. In this study, we examined plant oil formulations for the control of green peach aphid (Myzus persicae). Oil formulations were prepared by hydrolyzing the plant oils in ethanolic KOH solution and diluted at the rate of 1:500 for aphid control. The oil formulations showed aphid mortalities ranging from 24.44 to 43.33% in vitro. Significantly increased aphid mortalities were observed by the treatment of oil formulations combined with low-dosed imidacloprid. No significant difference in the aphid mortality was observed between the oil formulations. Mass spectrometry analyses of aphids treated with the low dosedimidacloprid plus the plant oil formulations detected similar concentrations of imidacloprid between the treatments. In field trial bioassays against aphids, significantly decreased aphid population were observed in the pepper plants treated with soybean oil formulation combined with the low-dosed imidacloprid, while aphid population dramatically increased in the pepper plants treated with the low-dosed imidacloprid alone. These results suggested that the plant oil formulations can be used as an environmentally-friendly method for enhancing the insecticidal effectiveness, which may play a role in reducing the use of synthetic pesticide in agriculture.
