Raney Al-Ni contains 62% of Ni2Al3 and 38% NiAl3 crystalline phases. Its applicability has been studied within an effective hydrodehalogenation of hardly biodegradable anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac in model aqueous concentrates and, subsequently, even in real hospital wastewater with the aim of transforming them into easily biodegradable products. In model aqueous solution, complete hydrodechlorination of 2 mM aqueous diclofenac solution (0.59 g L−1) yielding the 2-anilinophenylacetate was achieved in less than 50 min at room temperature and ambient pressure using only 9.7 g L−1 of KOH and 1.65 g L−1 of Raney Al-Ni alloy. The dissolving of Al during the hydrodehalogenation process is accompanied by complete consumption of NiAl3 crystalline phase and partial depletion of Ni2Al3. A comparison of the hydrodehalogenation ability of a mixture of diclofenac and other widely used halogenated aromatic or heterocyclic biocides in model aqueous solution using Al-Ni was performed to verify the high hydrodehalogenation activity for each of the used halogenated contaminants. Remarkably, the robustness of Al-Ni-based hydrodehalogenation was demonstrated even for the removal of non-biodegradable diclofenac in real hospital wastewater with high chloride and nitrate content. After removal of the insoluble part of the Al-Ni for subsequent hydrometallurgical recycling, the low quantity of residual Ni was removed together with insoluble Al(OH)3 obtained after neutralization of aqueous filtrate by filtration.

Mass spectrometric innovations in analytical instrumentation tend to be accompanied by the development of a data-processing methodology, expecting to gain molecular-level insights into real-life objects. Qualitative and semi-quantitative methods have been replaced routinely by precise, accurate, selective, and sensitive quantitative ones. Currently, mass spectrometric 3D molecular structural methods are attractive. As an attempt to establish a reliable link between quantitative and 3D structural analyses, there has been developed an innovative formula [DSD″,tot=∑inDSD″,i=∑in2.6388.10−17×Ii2¯−Ii¯2] capable of the exact determination of the analyte amount and its 3D structure. It processed, herein, ultra-high resolution mass spectrometric variables of paracetamol, atenolol, propranolol, and benzalkonium chlorides in biota, using mussel tissue and sewage sludge. Quantum chemistry and chemometrics were also used. Results: Data on mixtures of antibiotics and surfactants in biota and the linear dynamic range of concentrations 2–80 ng.(mL)−1 and collision energy CE = 5–60 V are provided. Quantitative analysis of surfactants in biota via calibration equation ln[D″SD] = f(conc.) yields the exact parameter |r| = 0.99991, examining the peaks of BAC-C12 at m/z 212.209 ± 0.1 and 211.75 ± 0.15 for tautomers of fragmentation ions. Exact parameter |r| = 1 has been obtained, correlating the theory and experiments in determining the 3D molecular structures of ions of paracetamol at m/z 152, 158, 174, 301, and 325 in biota.

The influence of pharmaceutical residues and heavy metals on living organisms has received global attention. The present study assessed the interactive effect of antibiotic residues and heavy metals in soil, as contaminated food with cadmium (Cd) and oxytetracycline (OTC) on the isopod Porcellio leavis. It was fed on fresh plant leaves contaminated with different concentrations of cadmium, Cd+OTC1000 ppm, Cd+OTC2000 ppm and Cd+OTC3000 ppm for 4 weeks. The changes in the feeding patterns, protein, lipid peroxidation (LPO), catalase activity (CAT), and total free amino acids (TFAA) were recorded. There were significant differences in the obtained results where Cd reduced the egestion ratio (ER) however, OTC enhanced this ratio. Biochemical analysis illustrated that combination between OTC and Cd inhibits the toxic effects of Cd at low concentration (1000 ppm), while at high concentration (3000 ppm) raise the toxicity. Detailed studies are required for further understanding of the interaction between OTC and heavy metals, and also its impact on soil animals and for improving soil risk evaluation.
