In the past five years the use of rotifers in ecotoxicologial studies has substantially increased . This greater interest has been due to the central role of rotifers in freshwater planktonic communities, the ease and speed of making quantitative measurements of mortality and reproduction, their sensitivity to common pollutants, the commercial availability of cysts, and the existence of reliable, standardized protocols . The main endpoints used in ecotoxicology studies are reviewed, including mortality, reproduction, behavior, cellular biomarkers, mesocosms, and species diversity in natural populations . For each endpoint, published studies are cited, along with the compounds investigated, duration of exposure, and the LC50s, EC50s or NOECs reported . Rotifers have been included as part of a standardized mesocosm and in several large-scale, outdoor mesocosm studies . A critique of rotifer use in ecotoxicology is offered and it is concluded that the scientific basis for including rotifers as part of a battery of ecotoxicological tests is well established .

Evaluación de riesgos ambientales del uso de plaguicidas empleados en el cultivo del arroz en el Parque Natural de La Albufera de Valencia RESUMENEl fallado del arroz, producido por Pyricularia oryzae, es una importante enfermedad de este cereal que, en los años en que se presenta, causa graves pérdidas económicas. Por ello, actualmente, se utilizan sistemáticamente fungicidas para prevenir su posible aparición, tratamientos que en la mayor parte de los casos están injustificados, debido a que no se dan las condiciones necesarias para el desarrollo de este patógeno. Los tratamientos fitosanitarios, conllevan la emisión periódica o puntual de xenobióticos que, como residuos procedentes de estas tareas, llegan a los ecosistemas acuáticos a través de acequias, canales de desagüe e incluso vía aérea, ocasionando con ello importantes efectos sobre la biota. Estas sustancias pueden ser bioacumuladas por diferentes eslabones de las cadenas tróficas y llegar a alcanzar niveles altamente perjudiciales para el ecosistema. Aunque los niveles de la gran mayoría de productos fitosanitarios suelen encontrarse en proporciones suficientemente bajas como para no causar la muerte directa y repentina de los organismos acuáticos, es necesario conocer la capacidad de las especies para resistir y por lo tanto vivir en estos medios periódicamente contaminados y, además, acumular en sus tejidos los tóxicos del mismo (bioconcentración), sobre todo cuando el destinatario final puede ser el hombre.Para establecer el riesgo derivado del uso de plaguicidas es necesario realizar una serie de estudios encaminados a evaluar el riesgo potencial para el medio ambiente (ERA), para dicha evaluación del riesgo se han llevado a cabo los siguientes estudios:1. Determinar las pautas de evolución de los fungicidas considerados, en sistemas acuáticos, estudiando experimentalmente sus constantes de degradación por hidrólisis, biodegradación por microorganismo y algas. 2. Determinar la toxicidad, efectos subletales y actividad bioacumulativa de los plaguicidas empleados contra Pyricularia oryzae en P.N. de L´Albufera de Valencia en diferentes organismos diana presentes en el ecosistema acuático del Lago. 3. Determinar los niveles de contaminación y la evolución temporal de los residuos de fungicidas en las parcelas tratadas y en los canales de desagüe. Así como realizar un seguimiento de la contaminación en el P.N. de L´Albufera de Valencia analizando los valores de inmisión de los fungicidas seleccionados. 4. Evaluar los riesgos ambientales del uso de fungicidas en el cultivo del arroz de las zonas húmedas mediterráneas.Para llevar a cabo estos estudios se han realizado análisis cromatográficos de muestras de agua tomadas en diferentes puntos del Lago de la Albufera de Valencia, determinando así las PEC (Predicted Environmental Concentrations) para cada compuesto. Posteriormente se establecieron los valores PNEC (Predicted Non Effect Concentrations) mediante ensayos de toxicidad con dos tipos de microorganismos acuáticos de ambientes estuarinos y de agua...

Use of toxicity assays for enantiomeric discrimination of pharmaceutical substances

Toxicity assays are commonly used as general indicators of environmental water pollution. In the study described here, selected toxicity tests have been used to evaluate the different toxicity levels of enantiomers of different pharmaceutical drugs that can be found as potential contaminants in water environments. Isomers of dopa, fluoxetine, and atenolol were tested with three aquatic organisms corresponding to different trophic levels: Daphnia magna (a crustacean), Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (a microalga), and Tetrahymena thermophila (a protozoan). Different levels of toxicity were observed for each enantiomer, suggesting that significant enantioselectivity occurs in aquatic toxicity and that such enantiomeric differences must be considered when evaluating the ecological effects of these compounds.
