Toxicity assessment of nano-sized MAX phases: considerations for safe-by-design approaches

Jaeseong Jeong,
Su-Yong Bae,
Jinho Lee
et al.

Abstract: Toxicity of two nano-sized MAX phases, Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2 were investigated to provide fundamental data for implementing the safe-by-design (SbD) approach.

“…However, no significant toxicity was observed in C. elegans and zebrafish embryos at the same concentration. 185 Maruthupandy et al examined the inflammatory potential of MXenes and graphene oxide through in vivo and in vitro tests. Pulmonary exposure in mice showed dose-dependent increases in toxicity end points.…”

“…At a concentration of 1 mg L –1 , MAX phases exhibited around 20% cytotoxicity and increased DNA strand breaks and IL-6 levels in BEAS-2B cells. However, no significant toxicity was observed in C. elegans and zebrafish embryos at the same concentration . Maruthupandy et al examined the inflammatory potential of MXenes and graphene oxide through in vivo and in vitro tests.…”
