Toxicity assessment of arsenic and cobalt in the presence of aquatic humic substances of different molecular sizes

Abstract: The release of contaminants in aquatic ecosystems can be influenced by humic acids. In this study, toxicity tests using environmentally relevant concentrations of arsenic and cobalt were conducted both in the presence and absence of aquatic humic substances (AHS) and the fractions of different molecular sizes in the range of (< 5, 5-10;10-30; 30-100 and > 100 kDa) using the microcrustacean Ceriodaphnia dubia. AHS together with arsenic reduced the toxicity, and the toxicity decreased in fractions of larger mole… Show more

“…The strong capability of HAs bind with PTEs may; on the other hand, decrease Co (Watanabe et al, 2017), Pb (An et al, 2015) and Cd phytoavailability (Farouk et al, 2011;Ondrasek et al, 2018;Ozfidan-Konakci et al, 2018). The molecular structure and functional groups of HAs might account for either PTEs mobilization or immobilization (Bai et al, 2020).…”

“…The Co content was variable among the sewage plants and showed no discernible trend. At high levels, Co is harmful to plants but is an essential element at trace levels in enzymatic biochemical reactions [42].…”

“…Assim, valores altos dessa razão indicam um maior grau de humi cação das SHA, causado pela diminuição do conteúdo de carboidratos (Dos Santos et al, 2007). O valor da razão atômica C/O encontrado no presente trabalho, que foi de 0,05, está abaixo do valor encontrado por Watanabe et al (2017) para as SHA extraídas do Rio Sorocabinha/SP, no qual o valor encontrado foi de 1,17, indicando que apresentam um baixo grau de humi cação.…”
