BACKGROUND This article reports for the first time the preparation and characterization of biochar/titanium dioxide (TiO2) composites by pyrolysis from medium‐density fiberboard (MDF) biomass. Their adsorptive and photocatalytic activities were evaluated by removal of methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solutions with and without UV‐light irradiation. RESULTS Characterization results suggested that the composite have different intrinsic characteristics in relation to the precursors. The biochar and TiO2 amounts of the composite significantly affected its performance. The MB removal efficiency with 1 g L−1 of the composite with 10% w/w TiO2 (B10T sample) was 2.3 and 2.2 times faster than that the B5T and B1T samples, respectively, and 1.5 times faster than TiO2 alone. CONCLUSION The loading of TiO2 significantly enhanced the adsorption performance of the composite and factors such as specific surface area, pore volume and pore size of the biochar synergistically promoted the photocatalytic activity of TiO2, coupled with a lower band gap for all composites produced. Both adsorption and photocatalytic efficiencies were confirmed to contribute to the degradation of the aqueous solution of MB by the hydroxyl radical (•OH) in lower molecular mass by‐products. The synthesized composite is a promising alternative sustainable material for removing chemical contaminants, since the biochar used as a support comes from the waste of the furniture industry. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Pode-se observar cada vez mais em websites voltados para cuidados capilares e no site de compartilhamento de vídeos YouTube o grande número de pessoas que utilizam a anilina à base de álcool para tingir seus cabelos. Pode-se encontrar também, relatos de indivíduos que apresentaram efeitos relacionados ao seu uso. Assim, este estudo busca confirmar ou negar a ideia inicial de que a anilina à base de álcool pode ser tóxica quando usada como cosmético capilar. Realizou-se análise da toxicidade dos componentes do produto através de Fichas de Segurança de Produto Químico, Dossiês Técnicos e Artigos científicos. Por meio do estudo realizado pôde-se concluir que a anilina à base de álcool possui potencial tóxico quando utilizada como tintura capilar, dessa forma, é necessária cautela ao utilizá-la. Entretanto, outros estudos são necessários para reafirmar o que neste foi encontrado.

Malachite green (MG) has been used globally in aquaculture but is not registered for use in food-producing animals in the European Union. The European Commission requested EFSA to evaluate whether a reference point for action (RPA) of 2 lg/kg for the sum of MG and its major metabolite leucomalachite green (LMG) is adequate to protect public health. Available occurrence data were not suitable for a reliable exposure assessment. The hypothetical dietary exposure was calculated, considering the RPA as occurrence value for all types of fish, fish products and crustaceans. Mean dietary exposure across different European dietary surveys and age classes would range from 0.1 to 5.0 ng/kg body weight (bw) per day. For high and frequent fish consumers, the exposure would range from 1.3 to 11.8 ng/kg bw per day. Both MG and LMG induced formation of DNA adducts in livers of rats and/or mice, and of micronuclei in mice. LMG also induced cII transgene mutations in mouse liver. MG caused a small, not dose-related, increase in thyroid gland follicular adenomas and carcinomas, and of mammary gland carcinomas in female rats. LMG caused an increase in hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas in female mice. Both MG and LMG may be considered as carcinogenic and as genotoxic in vivo. A lower 95% confidence limit for a benchmark response of 10% extra risk (BMDL 10 ) of 13 mg/kg bw per day for hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas was selected as reference point for neoplastic effects. For non-neoplastic effects, a lower 95% confidence limit for a benchmark response of 5% extra risk (BMDL 05 ) of 6 mg/kg bw per day was selected for the effect of MG on liver weight and of LMG on body weight. The margins of exposure were 1.1 9 10 6 or greater for neoplastic effects and 4.9 9 10 5 or greater for non-neoplastic effects.
