Xanthates are organic synthesized substances with a potentially wide range of applications. They may serve as essential components of many compounds or materials that also play a vital role in various industrial and socio-economic processes. Addressing the question of the use of xanthates without considering their toxicity, and their decomposition process and products would be ecologically and healthily less sustainable. To date, related information is still dispersed and less known to the public. Therefore, this work provides a comprehensive overview of the existing information on the essentiality, fate, ecotoxicity, and health effects of xanthates and associated compounds. According to available information from scientific, technical, and professional circles, xanthates are diverse, usually with a carbon chain of two to six carbon atoms. They play a crucial role in the sectors of the mining and mineral processing industry, agriculture, wastewater treatment, metal protection, rubber vulcanization, the pharmaceutical industry, and medicine. Xanthates' degradation under different factors and mechanisms, which determine their fate in the environment, leads to the formation of toxic substances, mainly carbon disulfide, carbonyl sulfide, hydrogen sulfide, and hydrogen peroxide. Xanthates and xanthates degradation products are seriously hazardous to humans, animals, soil and aquatic organisms, enzymatic system, etc. Simultaneous exposure to xanthates and metals results in the magnification or reduction of their toxicity level, depending on the exposed organisms. Such toxicological dimensions should attract more scientific and public attention for more safe production, use, storage, and disposal of xanthates. Due to the high affinity of xanthates for metal, xanthates-modified compounds are efficient metal chelating agents. Such a property should be explored to develop potentially low-cost and effective alternatives for metal removal and recovery from contaminated media. Living microecological hydrogels for wound healing

Chronic hard-to-heal wounds draw great attention worldwide, as their treatments are limited by infections and hypoxia. Inspired by the natural oxygen production capacity of algae and the competitive advantage of beneficial bacteria over other microbes, we presented a living microecological hydrogel (LMH) with functionalized Chlorella and Bacillus subtilis encapsulation to realize continuous oxygen delivery and anti-infections for promoting chronic wound healing. As the hydrogel consisted of thermosensitive Pluronic F-127 and wet-adhesive polydopamine, the LMH could keep liquid at a low temperature while quickly solidifying and tightly adhering to the wound bed. It was demonstrated that by optimizing the proportion of the encapsulated microorganism, the Chlorella could continuously produce oxygen to relieve hypoxia and support the proliferation of B. subtilis , while B. subtilis could eliminate the colonized pathogenic bacteria. Thus, the LMH substantially promoted the healing of infected diabetic wounds. These features make the LMH valuable for practical clinical applications.

In the copper ore processing process, effluents are generated that may be contaminated with surfactants. Among them, the xanthate-type surfactant stands out, widely used in the flotation of sulfide ores. At the end of this process, residual concentrations of xanthate can be found in the wastewaters, ranging between 10 and 200 mg/L. This substance, however, presents toxicity to biota even at a concentration of 1 ppm, which highlights the need to treat contaminated effluents to mitigate this contaminant. According to the literature, the Fenton Advanced Oxidative Process modified with copper is a technique that has advantages over the traditional Fenton method with iron. Among these advantages, the following stand out: the possibility of carrying out it in neutral and basic medium and the possibility of using soluble copper present in waste to catalyze the degradation of the contaminant. Furthermore, the technique is recognized to be faster compared to conventional biological methods, making it an attractive alternative for the treatment of effluents contaminated by surfactants, such as xanthate. This work studies the Cu-Fenton process for the degradation of xanthate surfactant (isobutyl and amyl xanthate) in aqueous solutions in neutral and basic initial pH. This research was divided into three parts: 1) characterization of surfactant samples by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; 2) degradation studies using the Cu-Fenton reaction, in which the catalyst and surfactant concentration parameters were studied, and the hydrogen peroxide concentration was optimized to improve total organic carbon (TOC) degradation values; and finally, 3) the proposition of a kinetic degradation model, based on tests of first and second order kinetic models. The results demonstrate that at an initial concentration of 100 mg/L of sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX), the process can achieve up to 99% SIBX degradation after 120 minutes, with a total organic carbon (TOC) reduction of 81%. SIBX degradation follows a 1st and 2nd order kinetic model, consistent with previous studies found in the literature. At an initial concentration of 10 mg/L of SIBX and potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), degradation close to 100% was achieved within 120 minutes. The results suggested the potential of the Cu-Fenton process for treating xanthate-contaminated wastewater, providing a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to conventional methods.
