Toxic Pollution in River Water and Bacterial Remediation: An Overview

Abstract: The major cause of global concern which leads to onset of numerous fatal diseases is water pollution which is responsible for the death of over 14,000 people every day. Water pollution is defined as any destruction in its native characteristics by addition of anthropogenic contaminants, which disturb the normal use of water either it cannot serve to human for drinking purposes and/or to support the biotic communities. The problem of water pollution is more frightening in developing countries in comparison to i… Show more

“…The environmental fate of pesticides depends on the physical and chemical properties of the pesticide as well as environmental conditions [6]. The accumulation of various kinds of pollutants and nutrients through sewage, industrial effluents and agricultural run-off into the water bodies bring about series of changes in the physicochemical characteristics of water, which have been the subject matter of several investigations [7]. In Africa, the inhabitants of the rural areas heavily rely on surface water resources for drinking and domestic purposes.…”

“…Water pollution is an environmental issue of major concern worldwide. However, the extent and severity of water pollution is more prominent in developing countries (Raghav & Shrivastava, ; UNEP, ). Surface waters, in particular, are more vulnerable to pollution due to their easy accessibility for disposal of wastes and pollutants (Bu et al., ; Oki, ).…”

“… 10 , 11 Bioremediation, especially associated with microorganisms, used for the cleanup of contaminated waters and soils is receiving most attention because of its environmental friendly approach and its ability to completely mineralize toxic organic compounds. 12 , 13 It is also a cost-effective strategy. 14 , 15 Besides cost-effectiveness, it is a permanent solution, which may lead to complete mineralization of the pollutant.…”
