Toxic neuropathies: a practical approach

Abstract: Toxic neuropathies result from exogenous substances damaging the peripheral nerves. There are numerous causes, including prescribed and recreational drugs, heavy metals, industrial agents and biological toxins. Timely recognition of these neuropathies gives better outcomes, as they usually improve or stabilise once the toxin is removed. Most toxic neuropathies are axonal, length-dependent and sensory predominant, although some have significant motor involvement or can present acutely or subacutely. Here, we ou… Show more

“…Considering this information, it can be postulated that nitrofurantoin might possess convulsive effect (23). However, the mechanism upon which nitrofurantoin causes neurological impairment differs from toxins like Ciguatoxin, which might be associated with their different ligand binding sites in the sodium channels (24). Therefore, this hypothesis is refused.…”

“…Also, prior treatment lines, including cytotoxic drugs that may cause neurotoxicity, such as oxaliplatin, should be taken into account when reporting neuropsychiatric ADRs in pretreated CRC patients (40). Furthermore, the role of prior radiation therapy and the administration of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) could impair neuronal repair and exacerbate nerve toxicity with REG (41,42). Moreover, hyperaesthesia, thermohyperaesthesia, hypoaesthesia, and burning sensation, can be considered as consequential symptoms of neuropathy, as already known in the literature (18).…”

“…По некоторым литературным данным исследуемое соединение обладает значительной токсичностью по отношению к теплокровным организмам. При изучении токсических свойств на лабораторных животных (крысы) LD 50 для анализируемого соединения -0,43 г/кг, для мышей LD 50 (в/в введение) -0,21 г/кг [2].…”
