A method for the quantitative analysis of organic compounds on submicron particulate matter (PM1) collected on quartz filters was developed. The compounds analyzed encompassed C22-C35 alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), quinones, levoglucosan, cis-pinonic acid and short chain dicarboxylic acids such as malonic, succinic, glutaric, adipic, suberic, azelaic, malic and phthalic acids. The method included extraction with a pressure liquid extraction system, sample filtration though glass fibre filter, fractionation by high performance liquid chromatography and subsequent analysis by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The study of the extraction efficiency of different solvent mixtures showed that DCM:MeOH 1:1 was the one providing the highest recoveries for all compounds. Extraction temperatures of 100°C provided better results than 60°C or 80°C. This method provided comparable extraction efficiency and qualitative and quantitative data to those involving Soxhlet extraction. Method recoveries for alkanes, most PAH, quinones and polar compounds calculated from spiked real samples were 52-72%, 78-101%, 50-62% and 76-104%, respectively, reproducibilities were 2-28%, 7-29%, 10-27% and 5-28%, respectively, limits of quantification were 0.01-0.1ng/m(3), 0.01-0.27ng/m(3), 0.04ng/m(3) and 0.32-2.8ng/m(3), respectively, which affords the quantification of a broad number of primary and secondary organic constituents of submicron aerosols.

Changes on an organism by the exposure to environmental stressors may be characterized by hyperspectral images (HSI), which preserve the morphology of biological samples, and suitable chemometric tools. The approach proposed allows assessing and interpreting the effect of contaminant exposure on heterogeneous biological samples monitored by HSI at specific tissue levels. In this work, the model example used consists of the study of the effect of the exposure of chlorpyrifos-oxon on zebrafish tissues. To assess this effect, unmixing of the biological sample images followed by tissue-specific classification models based on the unmixed spectral signatures is proposed. Unmixing and classification are performed by multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), respectively. Crucial aspects of the approach are: (1) the simultaneous MCR-ALS analysis of all images from 1 population to take into account biological variability and provide reliable tissue spectral signatures, and (2) the use of resolved spectral signatures from control and exposed populations obtained from resampling of pixel subsets analyzed by MCR-ALS multiset analysis as information for the tissue-specific PLS-DA classification models. Classification results diagnose the presence of a significant effect and identify the spectral regions at a tissue level responsible for the biological change.

Aerosol optical properties, including absorption coefficient (b abs ), absorption Å ngström exponent (AAE), and mass absorption coefficient (MAC), of methanol extracts in PM 2.5 samples were measured at an urban site in Xi'an, northwest China in a winter and summer season. Water soluble ions, organic carbon (OC), element carbon, eight carbon fractions, levoglucosan, and 13 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were also determined to explore the sources of brown carbon (BrC) in PM 2.5 . b abs at 365 nm wavelength showed a clear seasonal variation with much higher value in winter than summer. High levoglucosan and K ? concentrations in winter and their good correlations with b abs inferred the important contribution of biomass burning to BrC. Good correlations between b abs and OC1, OC2, OC3, or OP indicated the mixed sources of biomass burning and coal combustion for BrC. Relatively poor correlations were found between b abs and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene (IP) or Benzo[ghi]-perylene (BghiP), indicating limited contribution of vehicle exhaust to BrC. Seasonal distribution of AAE indicated that secondary organic carbon (SOC) BrC was mainly fresh SOC in winter but a mix of fresh and aged SOC in summer. MAC of BrC in winter was more than double of that in summer, suggesting that BrC from biomass burning and fresh SOC were stronger light absorbing in winter than the aged SOC in summer. A 7-wavelength Aethalometer model AE31 was used to evaluate the seasonal variations of b abs for BrC (370 nm) and black carbon (BC) (880 nm). BrC and BC were both important in light absorption in winter, but BC prevailed over BrC in summer.
