The lack of cost-effective systems for the extensive assessment of air pollutants is a concern for health and safety in urban and industrial areas. The use of polymer thin films as labelfree colorimetric sensors featuring specific interactions with pollutants would then represent a paradigm shift in environmental monitoring and packaging technologies, allowing to assess air quality, formation of byproducts in closed environment, and the barrier properties of the polymer themselves. To this end, all-polymer distributed Bragg reflectors promises reliable transducers for chemical stimuli, and effective colorimetric label-free selective detectors. We show selectivity attained by specific interaction of the polymeric components with the analytes. Such interactions drive the analyte intercalation trough the polymer structure and its kinetics, converting it in a dynamic optical response which is at the basis of the Flory-Huggins photonic sensors. Additionally, we demonstrate that such optical response can be used to esteem the diffusion coefficients of small molecules within the polymer media via simple UV-Vis spectroscopy retrieving data comparable to those obtained with state of the art gravimetric procedures. These results pave the way to an innovative, simple, and lowcost detection method integrable to in-situ assessment of barrier polymers used for the encapsulation of optoelectronic devices, food packaging, and goods storage in general. Currently, barrier properties of polymer thin films to vapors and gas are assessed via gravimetric 1 and pressure decay methods, 2-4 or by optical techniques based on microscopy 5 and infrared absorption, 6 which remained substantially unchanged for the last few decades. These methods need dedicated equipment and cannot be performed in-situ. In this scenario, research for new low-cost, simpler, and portable technologies to gather lab-on-chip devices is strongly pursued. In these regards, sensors based on the optical response of polymer distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) represent a possible revolution in the field due to the high responsivity to analytes in the vapor phase. 7-9 DBRs are planar photonic crystals made of media with different refractive index stacked to form a dielectric lattice. The interaction between light and DBRs induces frequency regions where light propagation is forbidden. These frequencies are called photonic band gaps (PBGs), and are easily detectable via simple reflectance or transmittance spectroscopy. 10 In analogy with the energy-gap of semiconductors, the PBG properties depend on the lattice structure. A water−isobutanol extraction-chromogenic system for Ni II , based on the azo dye 5-methyl-4-(2-thiazolylazo)resorcinol (MTAR; H 2 L) and the ionic liquid Aliquat 336 (A336), was studied. Under the optimal conditions (c MTAR = 2.0 × 10-4 mol dm-3 , c A336 = 5.6 × 10-3 mol dm-3 , pH 8.5 and extraction time t = 1 min), Ni II is extracted as a ternary complex which can be represented by the formula (A336 +) 2 [Ni(L 2−) 2 ]. In the absence of A336, or in a slightly acidic medium, a binary complex, [Ni(HL −) 2 ], with an absorption maximum at λ = 548 nm and a shoulder at 590 nm is formed. The following extraction-spectrophotometric characteristics were determined at the above-mentioned optimal conditions: λ max (545 nm), molar absorptivity (5.0 × 10 4 dm 3 mol-1 cm-1), Sandell's sensitivity (1.2 × 10-3 μg cm-2), Beer's law limits (0.05-3.1 µg cm-3), constant of extraction (Log K = 6.1) and fraction extracted (99.2%). The effect of foreign ions was studied; the most serious interferences were caused by Co II , Cu II and Cr III .

On the role of higher alcohols in the characterization of cachaça

There is a growing interest in chemical markers for the identification and certification of cachaça as a cane spirit produced in Brazil. It is known that the higher alcohols that are usually analyzed (propyl alcohol, Isobutyl alcohol and isoamyl alcohol) occur in all alcoholic beverages (fermented and distilled), but the relative proportions can vary markedly according to the peculiarities of the raw material and the production process. In this work, the contents of higher alcohols in 300 samples of alembic cachaça were compared, 220 from the state of Minas Gerais and 80 from other states, as well as three samples of industrial cachaça and 14 samples of whiskeys of various brands. The typical range of total higher alcohols in cachaça was 180-360 mg/100 mL ethanol. Cachaça containing higher alcohol concentrations greater than 360 mg/100 mL ethanol do not comply with Brazilian legislation. However, cachaças with higher alcohols concentrations below 180 mg/100 mL ethanol, as was found in one of the industrial cachaças, signify adulteration, for example, by mixing with fuel alcohol. The C4/C5 ratio varied less than the C3/C5 ratio, being consistently within the range of 0.20-0.50. In the whiskeys analyzed, the concentrations of higher alcohols were in the range of 160 and 270 mg/100 mL. Therefore, this parameter would not assist in differentiating between cachaça and whiskey. But the C4/C5 ratio was consistently different, being always greater than 0.50 for the whiskeys. Thus, the routine analysis of higher alcohols provides useful information both for tracking possible fraud and for assessments related to the identity or origin of cachaça.
