Towards understanding and predicting suicidality in women: biomarkers and clinical risk assessment

Abstract: Women are under-represented in research on suicidality to date. Although women have a lower rate of suicide completion than men, due in part to the less-violent methods used, they have a higher rate of suicide attempts. Our group has previously identified genomic (blood gene expression biomarkers) and clinical information (apps) predictors for suicidality in men. We now describe pilot studies in women. We used a powerful within-participant discovery approach to identify genes that change in expression between … Show more

“…As an example, in the study mentioned earlier in subjects with ultrahigh risk to first-episode psychosis, omega-3 fatty acids and nervonic acid concentrations aided in predicting transition into psychosis within 1 year (Clark et al 2016). In another study, DHA signaling was one of the top biological pathways overrepresented in validated biomarkers predicting suicidality in samples of women with bipolar disorder, depression, schizoaffective disorder or schizophrenia and men with bipolar disorder (Le-Niculescu et al 2013;Levey et al 2016). Furthermore, as described earlier, omega-3 fatty acids and their omega-6 ratio could predict depression onset during interferon-alpha treatment (Lotrich et al 2013).…”

“…Recent attempts have been made to circumvent the use of psychological assessments and develop biomarker proxies [11, 14]. A challenge for the identification of peripheral tissue-based epigenetic biomarkers in the context of psychiatry is the generalizability of the identified peripheral epigenetic variation in the brain.…”

“…Genes are prioritized and scored using CFG for AD evidence with a maximum of 12 external points. Genes scoring at least ten points out of a maximum possible of 18 total internal and external scores points are carried to the testing step Similar to our previous studies [7][8][9], the psychiatric subjects are part of a larger longitudinal cohort of adults that we are continuously collecting. Subjects were recruited from the patient population at the Indianapolis VA Medical Center.…”
