Towards the Stability of Low-Temperature Aluminum Electrolysis

Abstract: The results of several different tests related to the low-temperature aluminum electrolysis were considered in this work. The role of mass transfer processes in the anode-cathode space was recommended to be significant during electrolysis in the low-temperature KF-AlF3 and NaF-AlF3-based melts. The stationary polarization and voltammetry methods were applied in order to study the kinetics of the electrode processes on the carbon and metal electrodes in the KF-AlF3-Al2O3 melts and to select the electrolysis par… Show more

“…The reduction of aluminum on tungsten begins at potentials more negative than 0 V in KF-AlF 3 -Al 2 O 3 (vs. Al reference electrode) [25] and about −0.6 V in NaF-AlF 3 -Al 2 O 3 (vs. W reference electrode) [26]. In both cases, there was a peak related to Al-W compound formation observed in the cyclic voltammograms.…”

“…At least one cathodic peak R1 related to aluminum reduction and one wave R2 associated with lithium reduction were observed at all temperatures. The reduction of lithium was assumed based on the standard electrode potential with respect to aluminum and previous articles [24,25]. The anodic peaks of aluminum O3 and lithium O1 oxidation are also present at all temperatures but not at all sweep rates.…”

“…Moreover, Unlike the discussed Hoopes refining Process that necessitates the use of high temperatures and considerable energy amounts, lower temperature electrolysis has a much more economic nature and can also lead to the production of high-quality Al parts up to 99.89% purity [28]. In this process, the need to be refined aluminum (serves as an anode) is put in the anhydrous aluminum chlorides solution as an ionic liquid, but unfortunately, this method cannot be used in melt [42,43].…”

“…Some fluorides, such as lithium and potassium, can enter the bath with alumina [5,6]. In the last decade, there has been an increase in the number of publications devoted to a detailed study of potassium-containing electrolyte [7][8][9][10][11]. For the efficiency of the electrolytic process, the composition of the multicomponent melt requires rather fine control.…”
