Towards The Internet of Smart Clothing: A Review on IoT Wearables and Garments for Creating Intelligent Connected E-Textiles

Abstract: Technology has become ubiquitous, it is all around us and is becoming part of us. Together with the rise of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) paradigm and enabling technologies (e.g., Augmented Reality (AR), Cyber-Physical Systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain or edge computing), smart wearables and IoT-based garments can potentially have a lot of influence by harmonizing functionality and the delight created by fashion. Thus, smart clothes look for a balance among fashion, engineering, interaction, use… Show more

“…The smart campus services and infrastructure can be optimized thanks to the analysis of the user patterns and behaviors. For instance, mobility patterns, user activities, or social interactions can be determined through smartphone apps [94,95], by monitoring WiFi communications [96,97] or by collecting data from smartphone sensors [98], wearables, or even garments [99].…”

“…Even though a great market success has been announced for many years, no smart garment has been a great mass-market success yet. In fact, even if a lot of e-textiles prototypes have been developed in laboratories since 2000 [1], only a few smart garments have already hit the market [2]. One of the main reasons is the fact that wearable textronic prototypes suffer from poor washability and reliability [3].…”

“…These electronics can be utilized either in an active or passive way. An active device responds to user input; for example, as two-way radio communications or live GPS data transmissions to emergency responders [10,11]. Passive devices do not require user input, but rather provide sensory data or function to the user, or to an external support point [12].…”
