Instructional quality in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) education is crucial to ensure that students acquire the necessary skills to understand the complexity of socio-technical systems and design interfaces and interactions accordingly. Previous empirical evidence suggests that teaching quality is determined by teacher knowledge -domain-specific, pedagogical, and technological knowledge. Through a survey of N=54 HCI instructors, this paper reports on teacher knowledge and investigates its relationship with their perceived teaching quality at different levels of HCI education. Findings show that HCI instructors rated their domain-specific and technological knowledge rather high, while the components of pedagogical knowledge were rated lower. Yet, pedagogical knowledge was related to instructional quality, specifically the degree of cognitive activation provided to students. We contribute by documenting and discussing the strengths and weaknesses of HCI instructors' knowledge and teaching quality. We draw implications for instructors, institutions and the HCI education community. CCS CONCEPTS• Human-centered computing → Human computer interaction (HCI).

In addition to providing a platform to share curriculum plans and teaching materials, EduCHI 2022 will also provide opportunities for HCI educators to learn new instructional strategies and deepen their pedagogical knowledge.

CoP) has grown considerably over the past few years, starting with the HCI Living Curriculum workshop at CHI 2018 and continuing through to the EduCHI symposia at both CHI 2019 and CHI 2020. Central to the growth of the CoP has been two parallel efforts: creating channels to discuss issues pertinent to HCI education and providing a platform for sharing HCI curricula and teaching experiences. To continue this progress, we are organizing EduCHI 2021, the 3rd Annual Symposium on HCI Education. EduCHI 2021 will be held virtually and will feature interactive discussions about HCI education trends, curricula, pedagogies, teaching practices, and current and future challenges facing HCI educators.
