Towards sustainable development: Green supply chain design and planning using monetization methods

Abstract: Addressing environmental concerns in supply chain is a challenge, where one of the greatest difficulties is quantifying the environmental impacts. This quantification in abstract units is often done, but it does not always allow decision-makers to understand how their supply chains' influence the environment. In this regard, environmental quantification in monetary units can be an asset but, on this, not enough information exists about their application in supply chain. This work intends to develop a decision … Show more

“…The key features are as follows: an integrated structure that enables the integration of many types of LCA and LCC, the inclusion of many perspectives for arriving at decisions, a decisionmaking process aimed at selecting different methods of an analysis, and the integration of the system and procedures concerning the conventional calculation of life-cycle costs (CLCC) and environmental life-cycle costing (ELCC), as well as total costs, including the external 'ecological costs' of the impact of LCA on the environment. Da Silva, Barbosa-Póvoa [16] underlined that solving environmental problems within a supply chain is a challenge, where one of the biggest obstacles is to quantify the impact on the environment in an understandable and communicative manner. Quantification in chemical units has been conducted frequently, but it does not always let decision-makers understand how supply chains influence the environment.…”

“…According to this document, the European bioeconomy was essential for attaining neutrality as regards carbon dioxide emissions in many sectors, including the energy sector. Bioenergy, i.e., energy from biomass, Energies 2023, 16, 4200 2 of 27 has achieved the highest share among all renewable resources (RES) in the EU, and it is expected that RES will become the key element of the energy basket by the year 2030.…”

“…One approach to sustainable decision making is to attempt to monetize ESG outcomes to arrive at a single, profit-based objective. 5,6 This approach is commonly applied for carbon emissions via either a carbon tax [7][8][9] or through a social cost of carbon. 10 A few approaches within the life cycle assessment framework attempt to be more systematic about how monetization is performed, usually by attempting to define a marginal or opportunity cost for each sustainability objective.…”
